The Lyon Model United Nations (LyonMUN) is a non-profit organization under the French law of 1901, recognized as being of general interest by the French government. Since 2012, this organization has organized the only annual conference simulating the work of the United Nations and other International organizations in Lyon.

History

[edit]

In 2012, students from Lyon's universities set the goal of organizing a Model United Nations in Lyon. LyonMUN was created to engage a network of Lyon students in European and international Model United Nations (MUNs) and to establish and facilitate an inter-university network of Lyon students focused on international issues.

Since 2015, LyonMUN has been a community-based conference, accessible to those new to these simulations: some novice committees will therefore be simulated in French to broaden its potential audience.

In 2017, the 5th edition of LyonMUN won the "Best Medium MUN Conferences" award from the MyMUN platform, with an average score of 4.59/5. That year, in addition to being the best in its category, LyonMUN received the second-highest rating across all categories. Since then, the annual conference has been considered the best MUN in France.

In 2018, the 6th edition of LyonMUN achieved 6th place in its category.

The 8th edition of LyonMUN, initially scheduled for 2020, was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic in France, due to health safety concerns. Despite the cancellation, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees awarded it its prize for best communication as part of the 2020 MUN Refugee Challenge.
