Lloyd K. Turner Jr., known professionally as is an American music producer and songwriter known for his work in the R&B and hip hop genres. He is a member of the New Jack Swing group Basic Black and has contributed to projects for artists including Whitney Houston, Megan Thee Stallion, Too Short, and Jermaine Dupri’s So So Def Recordings.

Career

Turner began his music career with the R&B group Basic Black, which released its self-titled debut album through Motown Records in 1990. The album reached number 178 on the Billboard 200 and number 24 on the Top R&B Albums chart.[1] Turner contributed production work to tracks including "Nothing But A Party" and "Baby Can We Talk".[2] He remains an active member of the group.

In addition to his work with Basic Black, Turner contributed to projects under Jermaine Dupri’s So So Def Recordings, including credits on the 1998 compilation So So Def Bass All Stars Vol. III[3] and the 1999 promotional release Our Hot New Joints, Spring 1999, Vol. 1.

In 1998, Turner worked as a producer and songwriter on Whitney Houston’s album My Love Is Your Love, with credits on the tracks "In My Business", featuring Missy Elliott, and "Oh Yes".[4] The album was nominated for Best R&B Album at the 42nd Annual Grammy Awards.[5]

Turner’s later credits include production work on Too Short’s 2007 album Get Off The Stage[6] and contributions to the soundtrack of the 2008 film Another Cinderella Story. His work appears on the track "Don't Be Shy" by Small Change. The soundtrack debuted at number 8 on the Billboard Top Soundtracks chart and reached number 116 on the Billboard 200.[7]

In 2022, Turner was credited as a songwriter on "Flip Flop", a track from Megan Thee Stallion’s album Traumazine, which was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America.[8]

Honors

In 2017, Turner and Basic Black received the Key to the City of Columbus, Georgia in recognition of their contributions to music.[9][10]
