Draft:List of characters in Master Detective Archives: Rain Code
The following is a list of characters from the Spike Chunsoft and Too Kyo Games video game Master Detective Archives: Rain Code. The game follows Yuma Kokohead, an amnesiac detective-in-training who is partnered and haunted by a death god named Shinigami, who is sent to the isolated, eternally raining city of Kanai Ward, ruled by the Amaterasu Corporation. They, along with the Master Detectives, detectives with special skills and powers known as Forensic Fortes, are sent by the World Detective Organization (WDO), an extra-legal, extra-privileged organization devoted to eradicating the world's unsolved mysteries, to uncover Kanai Ward's Ultimate Secret to solve the Great Global Mystery plaguing the world.

Voiced by (Japanese): Katsumi Fukuhara[2]
The main protagonist of the game who wakes up in a train station's supply room with amnesia. Thanks to some documents on hand, he discovers that he is a detective-in-training of the WDO, dispatched to the isolated and eternally rainy city of Kanai Ward to uncover Kanai Ward's Ultimate Secret. In addition, he finds himself haunted by a death god by the name of Shinigami, who claims Yuma gave up his memories to her as part of a contract in exchange for her help in solving mysteries by going through the Mystery Labyrinth. Typically meek and uncertain of himself, Yuma constantly agonizes over what it means to be a detective and whether that's really what he wants to be; but whenever he sees someone in need of help, his sense of justice flares up, and he always steps in to help, regardless of the ensuing consequences. Unbeknownst to him, he is Number One, the head of the World Detective Organization. He made a deal with Shinigami to unravel the Great Global Mystery, which involved a homunculus secretly cloned from him, later identified as Makoto Kagutsuchi. This contract caused him to lose his memories, allowing him to be more receptive to receiving help from others while aiming to solve Kanai Ward's Ultimate Secret collaboratively rather than alone. He then took the place of the real trainee detective Yuma Kokohead and posed as him.
In Chapter 5, after he defeats Makoto and convinces him to share the truth with the people of Kanai Ward about being homunculi, he assists Makoto in escaping the Mystery Labyrinth through an emergency exit. This action causes his contract with Shinigami to become nullified, and he sets off on his own, erasing all memories of their time together. Ultimately, after restoring his memories and uncovering both Kanai Ward's Ultimate Secret and the Great Global Mystery, Yuma chose to leave the WDO to inspire change within the organization, embarking on a journey to solve mysteries around the globe.
His special ability, known as "Coalescence," allows him to utilize another person's ability with their consent while holding their hand.
Shinigami
[edit]Shinigami
Voiced by (English): Anjali Kunapaneni[3]
Voiced by (Japanese): Sayumi Suzushiro[4]
A death god contracted to haunt Yuma, and the main heroine of the game. Cheerful and unreserved at first glance, her sense of morality towards criminals and murderers is far less sympathetic than that of Yuma, which often puts the two at odds. Despite that, she is committed to serving as his mentor and helping him walk the path to becoming a great detective, causing her to become extremely attached and overprotective of him, much to Yuma's chagrin. In the real world, she is a small, floating spirit that always hovers nearby Yuma, and is invisible to all except him. However, once she opens a portal to the Mystery Labyrinths, she transforms into her true, humanoid form and is able to use her full powers to interact with the labyrinths and help Yuma in solving them.
After Number One opened the Book of Death in the WDO library, Shinigami agreed to a pact to help him rid the world of unsolved mysteries and bring happiness to everyone, serving as his mentor when he lost his memories so that he wouldn't stray from his path as a detective. Believing that Yuma would fulfill his promise to show her a world where everyone was happy, she opened an emergency exit from the Mystery Labyrinth after they peacefully resolved things with Makoto Kagutsuchi. She saw him off as he left, accepting that he would have no memory of their time together, a consequence of his use of the emergency exit and subsequent breach of their contract before returning to the Book of Death.
Kurumi Wendy
[edit]Kurumi Wendy
Voiced by (English): Lisa Reimold[5]
Voiced by (Japanese): Megumi Toda[6]
A girl living in Kanai Ward, who boasts herself as Kanai Ward's "only informant," a role she took on after her grandfather went missing. Her fascination with detectives and the WDO leads her to become quite attached and quick friends with Yuma and the other Master Detectives staying in Kanai Ward.
She is a student at Aetheria Academy and is a member of the theater club[7] who assists Yuma and his friends in multiple investigations after he proves her innocence in the murder of her classmate Karen in Chapter 2. It's heavily implied that she develops a strong crush on Yuma after clearing her name. Before he left Kanai Ward, Yuma left the Book of Death housing Shinigami in Kurumi's care, promising to come back for it. Too impatient to be left behind, Kurumi, too, sets off from Kanai Ward in search of Yuma.
World Detective Organization (WDO)
[edit]An extra-legal, extra-privileged organization devoted to eradicating the world’s unsolved mysteries. Their branches exist throughout the world, one of which is the Nocturnal Detective Agency in Kanai Ward. The key players in their activities are Master Detectives who possess Forensic Fortes, specialized skills and abilities honed to assist in investigations, but ordinary detectives are also enlisted.[8]
Those who do not possess a Forte are required to be highly adept across transferable skills to achieve certification.[9]
Vivia Twilight
[edit]Vivia Twilight
Voiced by (English): Aleks Le[10]
Voiced by (Japanese): Yuichiro Umehara[11]
One of the Master Detectives dispatched to Kanai Ward. A gloomy, self-indulgent young man with a love for reading and mumbling how he "wants to die someday". He can often be found lying down in odd places, such as the fireplace in the Nocturnal Detective Agency or under the grand piano in the hotel.[12] He's one of the few people who can see Shinigami and retain his memories both when entering and exiting the Mystery Labyrinth in Chapter 4, due to his spiritual affinity. Having enjoyed the time spent at the agency with Yakou, he refused to let the truth of Dr. Huesca's murder come to light despite knowing the identity of the culprit. He turned against Yuma inside the Mystery Labyrinth, making him a minor antagonist. Still, after witnessing Yuma's resolve to face even the most bitter facts, he decided to expose the truth. After the situation in Kanai Ward is resolved, Vivia returns to the WDO for future assignments.
His Forte is "Spectral Projection", which allows his spirit to leave his body and maneuver around as a ghost, floating and passing through walls while remaining unseen by people of the living.
Aphex Logan
[edit]Aphex Logan
Voiced by (English): Stephen Fu[13]
Voiced by (Japanese): Showtaro Morikubo[14]
One of the Master Detectives dispatched to Kanai Ward, whom Yuma meets on the Amaterasu Express. His parents were upstanding lawyers, but he lost them at an early age after they were killed by the local mafioso for prying too deeply into their affairs, forcing him to run away and live as an illegal alien in the slums from then on.[15] Due to these circumstances, he comes across as a rude, moody, and violent-looking man who indiscriminately shouts at everyone around him. But in actuality, he's a hardworking, decent person who clawed his way out of the slums and worked his way up from nothing. He was killed in Chapter 0, having consumed drugged beverages on the train ride to Kanai Ward, allowing the hitman pretending to be Zilch Alexander to burn his body beyond recognition in a scheme to fake his death.
His Forte is "Life Detection", where he can detect the location of any living thing within a 50-meter radius.[16]
Zange Eraser
[edit]Zange Eraser
Voiced by (English): Kurt Bicknell[17]
Voiced by (Japanese): Yosuke Akimoto[18]
One of the Master Detectives dispatched to Kanai Ward, whom Yuma meets on the Amaterasu Express. A solemn old detective who resembles a battle-hardened veteran and seems to be an experienced Master Detective. It's heavily implied through his speech that he has "ties to a government organization".[19] He was killed in Chapter 0, having consumed drugged beverages on the train ride to Kanai Ward, allowing the hitman pretending to be Zilch Alexander to burn his body to a crisp.
His Forte is "Thoughtography", where his memory can be transcribed as a Thoughtographic image onto electronic devices, such as a smartphone.[20]
Zilch Alexander
[edit]Zilch Alexander
Voiced by (English): Y. Chang[21]
Voiced by (Japanese): Tomokazu Seki[22]
One of the Master Detectives dispatched to Kanai Ward, whom Yuma meets on the Amaterasu Express. Loving the harmony between people and nature, he specializes in cases that threaten to disrupt this harmonious relationship.[23] He tends to lead the conversation and "allow" people to speak in turn, giving off an air of arrogance to the other detectives on board the train.[24] In truth, the "Master Detective" Yuma and the others met on the train was an assassin who killed the real Zilch Alexander ahead of time and took his place to fool the other detectives. Yomi Hellsmile dispatched him to eliminate the detectives arriving in Kanai Ward so that they wouldn't stick their noses into Amaterasu Corporation's secrets. In Chapter 0, after Yuma and the other detectives on board the train are knocked unconscious by the drugged beverages, the hitman burns all of the Master Detectives to death and fakes his death, leaving Yuma alive to frame for the murders. However, his soul was reaped by Shinigami after the Mystery Labyrinth was solved, resulting in his death.
His Forte is "Animal Investigation", which allows him to control animals to gather intelligence.[25] However, he prefers using small, four-legged creatures such as mice as they're easier to control.
Desuhiko Thunderbolt
[edit]Desuhiko Thunderbolt
Voiced by (English): Khoi Dao[26]
Voiced by (Japanese): KENN[27]
One of the Master Detectives dispatched to Kanai Ward. A young man with a naturally goofy and playful spirit who harbors ambitions of becoming a celebrated detective.[28] His investigative tactics, however, frequently devolve into attempts to flirt with women, aided by the assortment of disguise tools in his large backpack. Despite his lack of success in these romantic endeavors due to his silliness, this optimistic ladies' man remains unfazed. Uncomfortable around blood and corpses, he prefers undercover investigations to those involving murder. After providing him the opportunity to sneak around Aetheria Academy in Chapter 2, he began affectionately referring to Yuma as "my man." After the situation in Kanai Ward is resolved, Desuhiko returns to the WDO for future assignments.
His Forte is "Disguise", which allows him to change not only his clothes and face, but also his height, voice, and weight, enabling him to match his targets both visually and psychologically.[29]
Halara Nightmare
[edit]Halara Nightmare
Voiced by (English): Amber Lee Connors[30]
Voiced by (Japanese): Yui Ishikawa[31]
One of the Master Detectives dispatched to Kanai Ward. A sharp-witted and attractive detective with no specified gender. Halara is a cool-headed young detective who only believes in money and will not accept a request without payment, regardless of who the client may be, charging extremely high rates for their services.[32] They have no faith in humanity or people in general, and seem to have only a soft spot for cats and dogs. In Chapter 1, Halara assists Yuma in his investigation into the Nail Man serial murders for a high price, leaving Yuma in their debt. However, Yuma gains their respect after the case is resolved and treats him as an equal. After the situation in Kanai Ward is resolved, Halara returns to the WDO for future assignments.
Their Forte is "Postcognition", where they can see how a crime scene appeared at the time it was first discovered[33], not from the perspective of the killer or the victim, but from the first person to find the body.
Pucci Lavmin
[edit]Pucci Lavmin
Voiced by (English): Lindsay Sheppard[34]
Voiced by (Japanese): Yui Horie[35]
One of the Master Detectives dispatched to Kanai Ward whom Yuma meets on the Amaterasu Express. She has a calm, almost robotic demeanor and stilted way of speaking that contrasts with her youthful looks. However, she occasionally displays awkwardness and intense emotions in conversations,[36] which is attributed to her use of headphones to block out unnecessary sounds that might overwhelm her. She was killed in Chapter 0, having consumed drugged beverages on the train ride to Kanai Ward, allowing the hitman pretending to be Zilch Alexander to burn her body to a crisp.
Her Forte is "Audial Aptitude", where she can detect whispers, footsteps, and even heartbeats from up to 100 feet away simply by concentrating.[37]
Fubuki Clockford
[edit]Fubuki Clockford
Voiced by (English): Xanthe Huynh[38]
Voiced by (Japanese): Saori Onishi[39]
One of the Master Detectives dispatched to Kanai Ward. She is the daughter and heiress of the prestigious Clockford Family, an extremely wealthy family that manages the world's time. Due to her sheltered upbringing, she is somewhat naive about the outside world, which both stupefies and frustrates the people who come across her. Despite this, she is both caring and sweet. At her parents' behest, she was forced to leave her pampered life behind to gain some real-world experience, eventually joining the WDO, as she attributes solving mysteries to being akin to a life of adventure. While solving the Mystery Labyrinth in Chapter 3, she lashed out at Shinigami, whom she thought to be the abhorrent "God of Darkness". However, upon seeing how much Shinigami and Yuma trusted each other, she apologized to the death god and tried to befriend her, much to Shinigami's embarrassment. After the situation in Kanai Ward is resolved, Fubuki returns to the WDO for future assignments.
Her Forte is "Time Leap", the ability to rewind time and redo things. However, how far back is tied to her stamina, and once she's reached a certain point, she can't travel beyond that.[40]

Voiced by (Japanese): Yukari Tamura[42]

A genuine fashion lover, her mind frequently lingers on attire, and she swiftly cultivates a fondness for those whose physiques would suit her favorite outfits.[43]She was killed in Chapter 0, having consumed drugged beverages on the train ride to Kanai Ward, allowing the hitman pretending to be Zilch Alexander to burn her body to a crisp.
Her Forte is "Spiritism", where she can summon the soul of a deceased person as a spirit medium. To utilize this ability, she must wear the clothes the deceased wore while alive.[44]
Yakou Furio
[edit]Yakou Furio
Voiced by (English): Kaiji Tang[45]
Voiced by (Japanese): Takehito Koyasu[46]
Head of the only agency in Kanai Ward, the Nocturnal Detective Agency.[47] A sullen, cowardly young man who endeavors to change Kanai Ward for the better, even as he does all he can to avoid directly fighting Amaterasu Corporation[48]. Even so, he cares a great deal for his companions, though he's often exasperated by their antics and bizarre personalities. To avenge his wife who was murdered four years ago for whistleblowing the unethical actions by Dr. Huesca and was silenced as a result, Yakou sacrificed his life to murder Dr. Huesca at Amaterasu's lab in Chapter 4. In Chapter 5, after his body was transported to the Restricted Area, Yakou retained his faculties and refrained from attacking people in his zombified state. He later entrusted Yuma with a DVD containing footage of the Project: Homunculus experiment.
In the DLC-exclusive "Chapter Yakou: Thank You, My Detective", Yakou encounters the spirit of his late wife, who entrusts him with a pill she created prior to her death that has regenerative properties and could potentially repair his defective homunculus cells.
He has no Forensic Forte.
Number One
[edit]Number One
Voiced by (English): SungWon Cho[49]
Voiced by (Japanese): Akira Kamiya[50]
The top detective and leader of the World Detective Organization, who goes by "Number One". His true identity remains unknown, and he's rarely seen in public due to the numerous enemies he has amassed over the years. He's the one who sent the Master Detectives to Kanai Ward and tasked them with uncovering Kanai Ward's Ultimate Secret in order to solve the Great Global Mystery plaguing the world. However, he does not go further into the details and has them investigate on their own. He issues his orders to the detectives in Kanai Ward via a direct line from headquarters[51], the only form of communication that breaches outside of the city. His Forte is unknown and considered highly classified information. In truth, he is a body double employed by Yuma before losing his memories to issue orders to the detectives in Kanai Ward while keeping his own identity a secret.
Amaterasu Corporation
[edit]An all-purpose megacorporation with products that can be found all across the globe. They deal in pharmaceuticals, military weapons, and commercial goods. On the other hand, many dark rumors surround the company, leading to a saying among detectives: "Kick it and the dust comes off like a wall of smoke."[52] The company is the de facto ruler of Kanai Ward, where it's based, and has the city completely isolated from the outside world, with no one allowed to leave and very few allowed to enter.
Its security department, the Peacekeepers, serves as the police force, arresting anyone who opposes the corporation and covering up any cases they deem inconvenient to them.[53] The WDO and the Unified Government are unable to intervene in Amaterasu's affairs due to the company's influence and power.[54]
Makoto Kagutsuchi
[edit]Makoto Kagutsuchi
Voiced by (English): Brandon Winckler[55] (Masked)/ Lucien Dodge (Unmasked)
Voiced by (Japanese): Atsumi Tanezaki[56] (Masked)/ Katsumi Fukuhara (Unmasked)
The mysterious, always-masked CEO of Amaterasu Corporation who lives on the top of Kanai Tower. Behind his cheerful and coy personality is a suspicious personality that belies his true intentions. He is the main antagonist of the game and the mastermind behind the Great Global Mystery. While Yomi Hellsmile is ostensibly his employee, the two are constantly at odds, fighting for control of the corporation in a power struggle. Makoto is, in truth, the homunculus of Number One, created at a Unified Government research facility. His goal has always been to protect the homunculi of Kanai Ward, driven by his sense of kinship with them, and he is prepared to do absolutely anything to achieve it. This resulted in him keeping the city isolated from the outside world and hiding the truth of the residents' identities as homunculi who killed their original counterparts. His desperation to handle everything himself and keep everyone happy pushed him to abduct death row inmates captured by the WDO and turn them into meat buns for the residents to consume so they wouldn't starve to death, leading to the Great Global Mystery. Acting in secret behind the scenes of the Dr. Huesca murder case in Chapter 4, he secured documents that led to Yomi's downfall. He intends to restructure Amaterasu and the Peacekeepers to bring about a change in the winds of Kanai Ward. He lured the Master Detectives and his original counterpart to Kanai Ward in order to oust Yomi and to kill Yuma in the Mystery Labyrinth in order to gain complete control of the WDO. Following a fierce battle with Yuma inside the Mystery Labyrinth, Makoto is convinced not to shoulder everything by himself and to tell the residents the truth. He has since then become a steward of Kanai Ward, working tirelessly to protect the homunculi living there as their representative to the outside world.
Due to being an identical clone of Yuma/Number One, Makoto also possesses the Forte "Coalescence", allowing him to utilize another's Forte by receiving their permission and holding their hand.

Voiced by (Japanese): Yoshitsugu Matsuoka[58]
The director of the Amaterasu Corporation Peacekeepers. A sadistic young man who finds joy in the suffering and misfortune of others, and even treats his underlings like expendable tools.[59] He rules Kanai Ward with force and has established himself as a powerful figure within Amaterasu through his achievements.[60] He can't stand Makoto, but doesn't seem to antagonize him directly. He is the secondary antagonist of the game, serving as Makoto's subordinate, and is utterly clueless about how Makoto came into power. In Chapter 4, it is revealed that he spurred Yakou Furio into murdering Dr. Huesca after the doctor betrayed their collaboration to sell Amaterasu Corporation's technology to other enterprises, then use the money he earned to bribe the residents of Kanai Ward into following him, six months ago, something that started five years ago. After capturing Yuma and the others, Yomi planned to bury them along with the truth, but Makoto appeared with incriminating documents that led to Yomi's downfall. He was then arrested and taken away by Martina.

She considers herself "Yomi's right hand" and takes pride in the trust and affection he has for her.[63] With a suggestive way of words, she has no mercy for those who defy her, only showing deference and submissiveness to Yomi.[64] She serves as the main antagonist in Chapter 2. As punishment for being outwitted by the detectives during the Aetheria Academy case in Chapter 2, the Peacekeepers took her away to be crushed in a presser. However, Makoto saved her moments before her execution, and she sought to deliver judgment on Yomi for his crimes. After all of Yomi's misdeeds were revealed and he was arrested, Martina took responsibility for her complicity in the Peacekeeper's corruption, resigned from her position, and left.

He colluded with Peacekeeper Director Yomi to secretly sell off Amaterasu technology, planning all the while to double-cross Yomi and flee Kanai Ward. Attempting to use the turmoil caused by the hitman Fink the Slaughter Artist to fake his demise, he was instead stabbed and killed by Yakou, who sought revenge for his murdered wife. He is, in truth, the Nail Man, the serial murderer who terrorized the city. To save Kanai Ward from its depravity, he slaughtered those who preyed on its citizens, using the dolls nailed in the forest by the citizens with the names of their aggressors as his targets. He strangled his victims to death to make them suffer, then staged the crime scenes as locked room mysteries to make the citizens believe that the Nail Man from the urban legend was real and restore their faith. In Chapter 1, with the Mystery Labyrinth solved, his soul was reaped by Shinigami, resulting in his death.

An occult enthusiast, he pursues all kinds of unusual phenomena and urban legends, and is currently obsessed with the local "Nail Man" urban legend. His obsession with the topic can sometimes put his life in danger. Convinced that the Nail Man is real after the first few murders, he attempts to imitate the Nail Man's "divine work" by performing a copycat crime in the art gallery storage space, passing it off as if the Nail Man had also committed the deed. In Chapter 1, with the Mystery Labyrinth solved, his soul was reaped by Shinigami, resulting in his death.
Aiko
[edit]Aiko
Kurumi Wendy's friend and a member of the theater club at Aetheria Academy, who died six months ago before the start of the game. She was very popular and well-liked, considered by many to be the best actress in the theater club. Aiko's death and subsequent cover-up is what leads to Karen's murder soon afterwards.

Voiced by (Japanese): Hitomi Ueda[89]
A member of the theater club at Aetheria Academy and one of the four suspects in Aiko's death. Her beautiful looks give her an elegant aura typical of a lady. She's enthusiastic about acting, possessing a stoic philosophy about it. However, because of that, she tends to be uncooperative and rarely interacts with the other students. Six months ago, after quarreling with Aiko over the lead role, she accidentally murdered Aiko in a blind rage with a brick and made it seem like she committed suicide by jumping off the school's roof. Because her father was a higher up in Amaterasu Corporation, the Peackeepers covered up her murder. In Chapter 2, after performing a scene in a school play where her character drank poison, she actually vomited blood and died, her killers, Yoshiko, Waruna, and Kurane, having exacted revenge by tricking her to drink from a chalice painted in poison and killing her on stage.
