Draft:Labanc

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Labanc (ger. Labanzen/Labantzen, hun. labanczok/labancok, slk. labanci) were an imperial troop in Hungary during 16th and 17th centuries. They were the enemies of the Kuruc.

The origin of the term "labanc" is unclear, but it may have emerged as a concatenation of the German term "Lauf Hans!", and the French term "Le blanc". During Rákóczi's War of Independence it was used to denote the Habsburg-loyal troops in the Kingdom of Hungary. It then also was used to refer to imperial mercenaries and after Rákóczi's War of Independence ended in 1711 it came to refer to all loyal to the Habsburgers in Hungary. Nowadays the term is used to describe Austrians.
