LNET (also stylized as LNet or LNET Global) is an international nonprofit organization headquartered in Montevideo, Uruguay, that develops and operates trusted digital infrastructure based on blockchain technology. It was established in 2025 as the unified brand of two predecessor initiatives: LACChain, a program led by IDB Lab since 2019, and LACNet, a nonprofit association founded in 2021 by RedCLARA and LACNIC in collaboration with IDB Lab.[1][2]
As of 2024, the organization had implemented over 137 blockchain solutions across 23 countries, benefiting more than 9.3 million people.[3]
History
[edit]LACChain (2019–2021)
[edit]LACChain was launched in 2019 by IDB Lab—the innovation and venture capital arm of the Inter-American Development Bank Group—as a regional alliance to promote blockchain adoption in Latin America and the Caribbean. The initiative developed public-permissioned networks for use by governments, companies, and international organizations, with applications in digital identity, financial inclusion, traceability, and public services.[4]
In May 2021, Tata Consultancy Services joined LACChain as a partner to develop blockchain-based solutions in healthcare, energy, education, and financial services across the region.[5]
LACNet (2021–2025)
[edit]In 2021, RedCLARA and LACNIC co-founded LACNet, an independent international nonprofit association based in Uruguay, in collaboration with IDB Lab. The organization was created to provide neutral orchestration of the LACChain networks once IDB Lab's initial project phase concluded in December 2023.[4]
According to LACNIC's official announcement, LACNet established "the first global, production-grade, public-permissioned, enterprise blockchain network" associated with Internet governance.[2] The network operates under a contractual legal framework between node operators to ensure reliability and regulatory compliance.[6]
LACNet also obtained Category A liaison status with ISO/TC 307, the international technical committee for blockchain and distributed ledger technologies.[7]
LNET (2025–present)
[edit]On September 29, 2025, IDB Lab and LACNet jointly announced the launch of LNET, a unified brand identity consolidating both organizations. The announcement was made simultaneously in Washington, D.C., and Montevideo.[1]
According to the official IDB Lab press release, LNET's mission is to "promote emerging technologies such as blockchain to develop secure, inclusive, and sustainable solutions, aligned with global regulatory frameworks and without the exclusive control of any single entity."[1] The organization is established within the Casa de Internet in Montevideo as an international, neutral, nonprofit entity.[8]
Operations
[edit]LNET operates public-permissioned blockchain networks and provides institutional orchestration services for multilateral organizations, governments, and public-private ecosystems. Its areas of application include digital identity, verifiable credentials, supply chain traceability, digital finance, cross-border payments, asset tokenization, document certification, and digital government.[1][6]
The organization operates under a multi-stakeholder governance model designed to prevent exclusive control by any single entity, based on principles of neutrality, transparency, and interoperability.[2]
Selected projects
[edit]Among documented use cases:
- Issuance and verification of digital academic credentials and diplomas.
- Alpaca fiber supply chain traceability in Peru.
- The CADENA customs interoperability project within the Pacific Alliance.[9]
- Pilots for verifiable health credentials.
- Cross-border payment and asset tokenization use cases.
