Karate in Bihar[1] refers to the practice, promotion, and governance of Karate in the Indian state of Bihar. Karate in Bihar is overseen by the State Karate Association of Bihar which is affiliated to the Karate India Organisation and recognized by the Bihar Olympic Association.[2]
Karate has been growing in popularity across Bihar, particularly among the youth, and is practised both for self-defence[3] and as a competitive sport.[4][5][6][7]
History and development
[edit]The origins of karate in Bihar are not precisely documented, as the discipline developed gradually through local clubs, schools, and private training centres. Karate began to gain visibility in the state during the late 20th century, largely through independent practitioners and small associations.[8]
The growth of organized karate accelerated in the 21st century, with increasing participation among school and college students, as well as recognition by sports bodies at the state and national levels.[9] To streamline the administration of the sport, the State Karate Association of Bihar (SKAB) was established. The association was tasked with conducting state championships, organizing coaching camps, and selecting athletes to represent Bihar at national competitions.[10][11] It also works to ensure that karate activities in the state follow the technical standards and regulations laid down by the Karate India Organisation.[12]
The Government of Bihar, through the Department of Youth, Art, and Culture and later the Department of Sports, has played a supporting role in the development of karate. The state government provides recognition to associations such as SKAB, facilitates access to infrastructure for training and tournaments, and offers financial assistance to athletes representing Bihar at national and international levels.[13] Government initiatives such as scholarship schemes, sports hostels, and talent identification programmes have further encouraged participation in karate, particularly among students from rural areas.[14]
SKAB, in coordination with government agencies, continues to expand karate across districts in Bihar, supporting grassroots training programmes and encouraging wider participation, especially among youth and women athletes.[15]
