Kamathi Long

[edit]

Kamathi Long (born January 29, Grand Rapids, Michigan) is an American entrepreneur, athlete, content creator, and mental-health advocate. He is known for his athletic achievements in high school football and basketball, surviving cardiac arrest, founding YOOK Enterprises, and majoring in computer engineering at Texas Southern University.[citation needed]

Early life

[edit]

Kamathi Long was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and spent his childhood moving between Chicago, Illinois, and Grand Rapids.[citation needed] He was raised by his mother, Monique Long, a single parent who was diagnosed with cancer in 2011 and later overcame it.[citation needed]

Growing up, Long spent time on Chicago’s streets — 38th Street, 94th & Princeton, and 90th & Indiana.[citation needed] He developed a love for sports and music early, swimming and playing basketball at Tuley Park in Chicago.[citation needed] He is the second-youngest of six siblings: three older brothers, two older sisters, and one younger sister.[citation needed]

In 2021, Long’s oldest brother was killed in a car crash in Benton Harbor, Michigan — a tragedy that profoundly affected him.[citation needed]

High school athletics

[edit]

Long attended Union High School in Grand Rapids, where he played varsity basketball and football.[citation needed] He was ranked #4 in the state of Michigan as a safety and #35 in the state as a basketball player.[citation needed] After his freshman year, he moved to Texas, where he continued competing in both sports.[citation needed]

While at Crowley High School in Texas, Long suffered a cardiac arrest during a basketball game. He was resuscitated on the court and underwent emergency surgery.[citation needed] Despite being diagnosed with PTSD, he returned to school one week after surgery and passed all his midterms.[citation needed] He went on to graduate a year early, despite ongoing personal challenges and losses.[citation needed]

College, major and entrepreneurship

[edit]

Long enrolled at Texas Southern University, where he is studying computer engineering.[citation needed] The university’s Electrical & Computer Engineering program requires coursework in mathematics, sciences, engineering fundamentals, and a senior capstone project.[citation needed]

During his freshman year, Long founded YOOK Enterprises, a business focused on faith, resilience, and community impact.[citation needed] He also became a content creator, signing an NIL partnership with OD Gaming, and serves as the 2K team captain at Texas Southern.[citation needed]

Personal life and advocacy

[edit]

Long is a mental health advocate, hip hop enthusiast, gamer, and mentor to youth — particularly young men and women in minority communities.[citation needed] His journey of overcoming adversity, surviving serious health challenges, and leveraging sports and technology serves as inspiration.[citation needed]

His mother, Monique Long, passed away in 2025, a week before his birthday. This loss deeply shaped his outlook on life and commitment to helping others.[citation needed]

Legacy

[edit]

Kamathi Long is recognized for his resilience, athletic accomplishments, entrepreneurial success, and role as a community mentor.[citation needed] From sports fields in Chicago and Michigan to surviving cardiac arrest and pursuing a computer engineering degree, his story underscores the power of determination, faith, and giving back.[citation needed]
