KC Das Private Limited is an Indian confectionery enterprise headquartered in Kolkata, West Bengal. It is historically significant for the production and dissemination of the Bengali sweet Rasgulla (also known as Rossogolla). The company was formally established in 1930 by confectioner Krishna Chandra Das.

History

[edit]

The origins of KC Das Private Limited are linked to Nobin Chandra Das, an influential Bengali sweet-maker credited with creating the modern form of Rasgulla in 1868 in Bagbazar, Kolkata. His son, Krishna Chandra Das, continued this familial culinary tradition and subsequently founded KC Das Private Limited in 1930. The initial retail location at Esplanade was notable for its unique approach to sweet packaging.

Innovations and Legacy

[edit]

KC Das was among the first Indian confectionery companies to implement methods for the preservation and distribution of Rasgulla at a broader scale. Notably, the introduction of vacuum-sealed tins during the mid-20th century facilitated extended shelf life and enabled exportation beyond India.

The company produces a range of traditional Bengali sweets including Sandesh, Rasmalai, Chamcham, Mishti doi, and Rajbhog.

Business and Expansion

[edit]

KC Das operates multiple outlets within Kolkata and other metropolitan areas in India. The company also exports packaged sweets to countries with a substantial Indian diaspora, including the United States, United Kingdom, Singapore, and United Arab Emirates.

The corporate headquarters remain in Esplanade, Kolkata. KC Das competes with other longstanding confectionery enterprises such as Bhim Chandra Nag, Ganguram, and Banchharam.

Cultural Impact

[edit]

KC Das and its production of Rasgulla are integrally associated with Bengali culinary heritage. The company's lineage connects directly to Nobin Chandra Das, whose contributions are frequently cited in discussions regarding the origin of this iconic sweet.

The enterprise and its products have been documented in literature, travel guides, and media exploring Kolkata's culinary history. In 2017, the GI tag for “Banglar Rasogolla” was awarded to West Bengal, underscoring the region’s historical association with the sweet.
