Early life and education

[edit]

Braun transitioned into librarianship after a 13-year career teaching English. Inspired by his wife, a photograph archivist and librarian, he earned his Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) from San José State University in 2012.

Braun was born with a congenital limb difference, missing his left arm below the elbow, and has spoken about how this experience shaped his perspective as an educator.[1]

Braun attended the University of California, Irvine, where he managed the student radio station KUCI.[2]

Career

[edit]

Braun serves as the teacher librarian at Beverly Vista Middle School in the Beverly Hills Unified School District, where he helped launch the school’s library program. He leads the library’s collection development and designs digital literacy and media literacy curricula for students in grades 6–8.

He also teaches digital citizenship, advises the yearbook, and provides home and hospital instruction for students with temporary medical conditions.[3]

He contributed to the district's technology plan and advocates for the integration of ethical and responsible technology use in K–12 settings.

COVID-19 response

[edit]

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Braun implemented a curbside distribution model for over 900 textbook bags, which was cited as a national model for safety. He also maintained student programming via online platforms, including Zoom clubs, remote lessons, and a virtual chess forum.[4]

Advocacy

[edit]

Braun advocates for robust school library programs and supports California legislation requiring media literacy and artificial intelligence literacy instruction in schools, including Assembly Bills 2876 and 873.[1]

Braun is a member of the California Department of Education Artificial Intelligence in Education Workgroup, and has contributed to their Learning With AI, Learning About AI webinar series.[5]
