Ivan Brooke Slade Bullock (born 1976) is an Australian musician, composer, and multi-instrumentalist. He is known for his music projects Mystral Tide and Minorarc, which incorporate the genres of dark wave, industrial, classical, and progressive metal.[1][2]He is the founder of the non-profit arts projects Dawn Industry and Enzyme, which contributed to underground music and experimental music in Australia.[1][3][4]

Early life

[edit]

Bullock was born in Canberra in 1976.[5][4] He grew up playing classical piano and violin.[2]After a neck injury at the age of 18 forced him to stop playing the violin, he began composing experimental and industrial music.[2][5]

Career

[edit]

Mystral Tide

[edit]

Whilst residing in Tokyo, Bullock recorded and performed gothic, darkwave and piano-focused music as Mystral Tide.[6][7][8][5]Mystral Tide performed at events in Japan, Europe, and Australia.[9]Bullock initially self-distributed Mystral Tide CDs at these events.[10]As part of Mystral Tide, Bullock performed in venues such as the Labyrinth Club.[11]Mystral Tide released the album Whirlpool of Souls in 2001.[6][7][8][12]In the same year, Mystral Tide began selling self-released CDs at Tower Records in Shibuya.[11]After developing relationships in Japan’s music community, Bullock performed with Japanese experimental project Seij minus aÇ at Wave Gotik Treffen in 2002.[13][14][15][16]

Bullock moved back to Australia in 2003, settling in Melbourne.[10][17][18][19]After moving back to Australia, Bullock organized the Enzyme concert series from 2005 to 2015, which showcased Australia’s experimental musicians and included the “Enzyme Tower” performances at the Melbourne Fringe Festival in 2010.[14][20][21][10] In 2005, he also founded the online community DEMUS (Dark Electronic Music Underground Society) and the online music store Darkstereo, two platforms designed to promote local experimental artists from the Australian underground electronic music scene.[4][22][5]

In 2004, Mystral Tide was featured on the electronica compilation CD ElectriCity 2, which was published by Blatant Propaganda and 2XX.[23]

Bullock released his second album as Mystral Tide, Geometry of Loss, in 2007.[23]

Bullock released the third Mystral Tide album, Isle of Narrows, in 2009.[23] He also produced the compilation album DEMUS Compiled 1 and 2.[23]

Minorarc

[edit]

Bullock released his first album as Minorarc, a self-titled album, in 2010.[23][5] Since 2010, Ivan has recorded and released his music under the project title Minorarc, combining influences from classical music and progressive metal.[2][24]

Minorarc's second release, an EP titled Involution, was in 2013.[23] Bullock also produced the compilation album DEMUS Compiled 3, which was released in the same year.[23]

Minorarc released the albums Untold and Overburden in 2022.[25][5][11]

Another Minoarc album, Inclusions, was released in September 2023.[4][24][26][27]This album combined Minorarc’s usual style with elements of modern metal and djent.[28][17][21]
