The Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Digital Sciences, acronym LISN, is a research laboratory in digital sciences, located on the campus of Paris-Saclay University, in Orsay and Gif-sur-Yvette.

Overview

[edit]

The institute is a joint research unit (UMR 9015) between the CNRS and Paris-Saclay University, with Inria and CentraleSupélec as secondary supervisory bodies. It was formed from the merger of two UMRs, the LIMSI (founded in 1972) and the LRI, which took place on January 1, 2021.

As of May 2025, LISN has approximately 400 members, consisting of 180 researchers and faculty researchers, 54 engineers and technicians, 145 doctoral students, and hosts more than 200 interns each year. Its management is led by Sophie Rosset, a research director specializing in dialogue and dialogue systems, assisted by two deputy directors: Didier Lucor and Michel Beaudouin-Lafon.

Research

[edit]

Research conducted at LISN covers a broad scientific spectrum ranging from flow simulation in fluid mechanics to human-computer interaction, including algorithms, artificial intelligence, natural language and speech processing, and bioinformatics. This work addresses multiple societal challenges of the National Research Strategy, notably automated processing of large data sets, next-generation networks, connected objects, energy efficiency, and the design of collaborative interfaces.

LISN has several notable experimental platforms, including the "Fablab Digiscope" (a digital fabrication workshop open to the public) and immersive installations such as "Wild & Wilder" and "EVE" (Evolutive Virtual Environment).

Structure

[edit]

LISN is structured into five thematic departments and five cross-cutting initiatives:

  • Research Departments
    • Algorithms, Learning and Computation
    • Data Science
    • Language Sciences and Technologies
    • Human Interaction
    • Mechanics-Energy
  • Cross-cutting Initiatives
    • Deep Learning for Physics and Physics for Learning
    • Art and Sciences
    • Responsible Research
    • Digital Sciences and SSH (Social Sciences and Humanities)
    • Visualization and Exploration of Large Datasets

Collaborations and Distinctions

[edit]

LISN collaborates with numerous academic and industrial partners, including large companies such as EDF, Thales and Facebook, SMEs such as the artificial intelligence platform publisher Davi, and startups such as The Artificial Intelligence Institute.

Several LISN members have received notable distinctions in their respective fields. For example, as part of the "Continuum" project led by Michel Beaudouin-Lafon, professor at Paris-Saclay University, the laboratory obtained EquipEx+ funding from the Future Investment Program (PIA4) in early 2021.

Location

[edit]

LISN is located on the Paris-Saclay University campus, with two main sites:

  • Orsay: University Campus, Building 507, Rue du Belvédère, 91405 Orsay
  • Gif-sur-Yvette: 3 rue Joliot Curie, Breguet Building, 91190 Gif-sur-Yvette

Former Laboratories

[edit]
  • The LIMSI (Laboratory for Computer Science for Mechanics and Engineering Sciences), created in 1972 by Lucien Malavard, was initially the Analog Computing Center attached to ONERA.
  • The LRI (Laboratory for Computer Science Research) was a joint research unit of the CNRS and Paris-Saclay University.
