In Control was an American hardcore band from Oxnard, California. They are one of the most influencial Modern Hardcore Punk Groups to form out of the "Nardcore" Scene.
History
[edit]The band was started by Zack Nelson in 1999 when he recruited Ryan Fredette, Chris Holden, and Tony Melino. At this time, nardcore and hardcore punk were on the decline. The band recorded a demo cassette tape in 1999 called Hometown Pride '99. In 2000, they self-released their first EP, The Nard Curse, recorded at Ghost Chamber in Ventura, California. They played a short tour in Northern California with Kill Your Idols in the same year. In December 2000 they performed at the Living Room in Goleta, California with San Diego-based straight edge band Over My Dead Body, Tehachapi-based Diehard Youth, Los Angeles-based Lifes Halt, and Santa Barbara-based Fields of Fire. This show was recorded and released in 2001 as part of the Intense Energy Compilation.[1]
In summer of 2001 they recorded their debut album Another Year with Indecision Records, which was followed by a three and a half week long tour with Fields of Fire.[2] In addition to this album, they released a compilation through Six Weeks Records called Breaking the Curse compiling their previously released EP The Nard Curse and their Hometown Pride '99 demo tape.[3]
In 2002 they embarked on a succesful second US tour with Terror across five weeks. During this time they recorded new material and released The Truth Hurts via Indecision Records.In 2002 Guitarist Zack Nelson started a side project called Retaliate.[4] Following their spring 2003 tour, Tony Mellino left the band. He would be replaced with Retaliate member Matt Anderson, with whom the band recorded their self-titled EP in 2003. Due to Anderson being only sixteen years old, he was unable to tour, leading to Paul Sylvester to fill his role on the band's fourth tour, that September with Bane, The Promise, and Comeback Kid. This saw the band perform at legendary venues such as Che Cafe, CBGB, Gilman Street, and Fireside Bowl.[5]
In Control have also played with Ill Repute, The Warriors, Champion, Dr. Know, No Motiv, Dead Kennedys, Strike Anywhere, Animosity, Avenged Sevenfold, Death By Stereo, and Modern Life Is War.[6]
Plans were made for a new album and a European tour that did not manifest. Paul Sylvester left the band and In Control played four final shows in 2004, before breaking up in 2005. Following their break up Zack Nelson continued on with his Side Project Retaliate and other members went on to form Annihilation Time.[7]
