Hermann Stuppner (born 1957 in Deutschnofen, South Tyrol) is a pharmacognosy scientist and professor emeritus at the University of Innsbruck. He is renowned for his research on medicinal plants and natural product chemistry, particularly known for working on Edelweiss a famous alpine flora.[1][2] Stuppner has significantly contributed to the scientific understanding of traditional herbal remedies and their applications in modern medicine. He is the founding president of the Herbal Medicinal Products Platform Austria (HMPPA)[3] and has received several national and international awards, including Austria's prestigious Cross of Honour for Science and Art, First Class.[4]
Early Life and Education
[edit]Hermann Stuppner attended the Franciscan Gymnasium in Bolzano and then studied pharmacy at the University of Innsbruck from 1976 to 1982.[1] After completing his master's degree, he passed the Italian state examination for the pharmacy profession at the University of Padua in 1983. Stuppner received his doctorate in pharmaceutical biology from the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in 1985 with a dissertation on constituents of Echinacea purpurea. He then conducted postdoctoral research, specializing in phytochemical and toxicological studies, at the University of California, Irvine (USA). In 1987, he returned to Austria and joined the Institute of Pharmacognosy at the University of Innsbruck. In 1993, he completed his habilitation at the Institute of Pharmacognosy, University of Innsbruck. In 1995, he received a call for a C-3 professorship in "Pharmazeutische Biologie" at the University of Marburg, Germany, and in 1997, he was appointed Associate Professor of Pharmacognosy at the University of Innsbruck. From 2001 to 2022, he served as Full Professor of Pharmacognosy (Pharmaceutical Biology) and Head of the Institute of Pharmacy/Pharmacognosy at the University of Innsbruck. Stuppner retired in September 2022.[4][5]
Research Contributions
[edit]Hermann Stuppner is internationally recognized for his research in pharmacognosy and natural product chemistry. His work primarily focuses on the isolation, structural elucidation, and pharmacological evaluation of secondary metabolites derived from higher plants, especially those with anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiparasitic, and antitumor properties.
A major part of his scientific legacy involves the in-depth study of Leontopodium nivale (Edelweiss), a rare alpine medicinal plant.[6] Stuppner and his team successfully identified the lignans leoligin and 5-methoxyleoligin from Edelweiss roots—compounds that have shown potential in treating cardiovascular diseases and preventing myocardial infarction.[7][8] He has also investigated various traditional medicinal plants, such as Cicerbita alpina, Sanicula europaea, Scadoxus multiflorus, and Cyperus articulatus, uncovering novel bioactive molecules with antiparasitic and cytotoxic effects in several of these species.[9] Moreover, he has significantly contributed to the development and validation of analytical methods for the quality control of herbal medicines.[10]
Stuppner served as the coordinator of the Austrian national research network (NFN) “Drugs from Nature targeting Inflammation,” a six-year interdisciplinary project funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF). The project brought together academic institutions and industry to identify plant-derived anti-inflammatory agents with potential therapeutic applications.[11]
In parallel, he contributed to the EU-funded project VascAgeNet – Vascular Ageing Network, a multidisciplinary initiative aimed at promoting vascular ageing as a measurable and modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular diseases.[1] Within the project, Stuppner’s expertise in natural compounds helped explore the potential of plant-derived substances in improving vascular function and healthy ageing. His involvement in this network highlights his commitment to translational research that bridges molecular pharmacognosy and preventive cardiovascular medicine.[12][13][14]
His long-standing collaboration with industry partners, such as the phytopharmaceutical company Bionorica, has led to translational research success. In 2013, one of these projects was awarded Austria’s prestigious Houska Prize for applied research.[15]
With over 550 scientific publications and more than 20,000 citations, Stuppner ranks among the most highly cited pharmacognosists in Europe.[16] He continues to contribute to international research efforts and is an influential figure in both academic and applied phytochemistry.[5]
Academic and Scientific Service
[edit]He served for 18 years as Dean of Studies at the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy at the University of Innsbruck, playing a central role in curriculum development, accreditation, and quality assurance. He was also head of the Department of Pharmacognosy and later deputy head of the Institute of Pharmacy until his retirement.[17]
Beyond university duties, he held significant leadership positions in scientific organizations. From 2006 onward, he has been the founding president of the Herbal Medicinal Products Platform Austria (HMPPA)[3][2], promoting interdisciplinary research on herbal medicines. He also served eight years as president of the Austrian Pharmaceutical Society (ÖPhG), continuing as a board member afterward.[18] Additionally, he contributed to advisory boards, review panels, and scientific societies across Europe and supported standardization efforts including contributions to the European Pharmacopoeia.[17][19][20]
