Hefty Smurf (original French name Schtroumpf Costaud) is one of the main protagonists of the Smurfs comic books, the 1980s Smurfs cartoon show, the 2021 Smurfs cartoon show, the Smurfs movies and video games.[1] He was created by the Belgian cartoonist Peyo and comics writer Yvan Delporte.[2][3]

Characteristics

[edit]

Hefty Smurf is easily recognized by the tattooed heart on his arm. He practices every sport there is. His favorite sport is weightlifting. Often the other Smurfs ask him for help when there is a job that involves a lot of strength.[4] Hefty is naturally extra strong, and he believes that with great power comes great responsibility. His bulging muscles make him feel protective of and responsible for his fellow Smurfs, even if they don’t believe they need protecting.[5] This also means he can lose patience, and falls short in the humor department, taking everything quite literally.[6]

Comic books

[edit]

He appears for the first time in the King Smurf story, where he is the second Smurf to be recruited by King Smurf after Harmony Smurf, and becomes "Head Chief" of the Smurf Legal Enforcement.[7]

Animated version

[edit]

In the English version of the 1980s The Smurfs series, Hefty Smurf is dubbed by Frank Welker.[8] Of all the Smurfs he has the deepest singing voice. Hefty has his name in six episode titles of the 1980's series which are "Sir Hefty", "Hefty's Heart", "Hefty and the Wheelsmurfer", "Hefty's Rival" and "Hefty Sees a Serpent" and "Bananas Over Hefty".[9]

Movies

[edit]

Hefty Smurf has a minor role in the first Smurfs movie The Smurfs and the Magic Flute.[10] Also in the 2011 movie The Smurfs he has a brief appearance. Hefty appears as a major character in The Smurfs: A Christmas Carol, being the Smurf of Christmas Future, whose purpose is to show Grouchy what his actions will cause. He has a brief appearance in the early and late parts of The Smurfs 2. In Smurfs: The Lost Village (2017), Hefty plays a much more prominent role, serving as one of the most prominent of the Smurf Village inhabitants and as part of a team that also includes Brainy Smurf.[11]

Video games

[edit]

Hefty Smurf is one of the playable characters in The Smurfs (1994), The TeleTransport Smurf (1995), The Smurfs 2: The Video Game (2013) and The Smurfs: Mission Vileaf (2021). He appears in Smurfs Kart (2022) as one of the twelve characters you can play. His special power is showing off a workout effect to push the others along the track.[12]
