Gimkit is an American online game-based learning platform, similar to Kahoot! and Blooket. Teachers can host game modes, and students must answer questions from a question set to properly participate and play in the games.[1] As of October 2025, Gimkit has had 11.5 total visits and is the 38th most visited website in Education.[2]

History

[edit]

Gimkit was co-founded by Josh Feinsilber and John Osborn in 2017.[3] The first game mode was Classic (later renamed to Tycoon), where players earned money by answering questions, purchasing upgrades (which gives the player more cash), and buying powerups (which can be used to help the player or hurt and help other players). The website later expanded to include 2D modes, where players appear as characters known as "Gims" and interacted with objects placed on a map.[4]

Rewards System

[edit]

Players can earn GimBucks (the currency system used in Gimkit) by answering questions in 2D game modes.[5] They can spend this currency in the shop, where they can buy either a pack or a specific item. Packs cost 30 dollars, and players receive a random item in the pack when they purchase one. The items rotate weekly, and have varying prices depending on what they are.[6]

Gimkit Game Modes

[edit]

Game modes, sometimes referred to as "maps", are different games students can play when using the platform. All game modes fall under two categories: Tycoons (also known as 1D modes) and 2D game modes.[4][7]

Almost all 1D game modes revolve around answering questions and earning cash, with the exception of Draw That, What Is, and Trust No One. 2D game modes involve a physical character that the player can move to interact with other objects in the game.

Gimkit Creative

[edit]

Gimkit Creative is a game creator that allows students and teachers to create and publish their own game modes.[8] Public maps can be viewed from the Discovery tab on the Creative page.
