GameChat is a built-in voice and video communication application developed by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch 2 system. It is scheduled to launch on June 5, 2025, alongside the release of the Nintendo Switch 2 console.[1]
Overview
[edit]GameChat was introduced during the April 2, 2025, Nintendo Direct as one of the flagship social features of the Switch 2.[2] It allows up to 12 players to join a voice chat room and includes screen sharing and optional video chat. This marks a significant advancement from Nintendo’s previous systems, where players had to use the Nintendo Switch Online mobile app for voice chat.
Features
[edit]- Voice Chat: Real-time voice chat accessible through the console’s system UI or from supported games. The built-in microphone adjusts input based on surroundings and filters out unwanted noises, such as game sounds.[3]
- Screen Sharing: Players can broadcast gameplay to others in the chat room, even if they are playing different games.[4]
- Video Chat: Supported through an optional USB-C camera accessory sold separately.
- “C” Button Activation: The new "C" button on the updated Joy-Con 2 (R) controller launches GameChat instantly.[5]

It supports 1080p video at 60 frames per second and is used for video chat in GameChat, facial recognition in certain games, and future AR applications. The camera includes a manual privacy shutter.

Availability
[edit]GameChat will be pre-installed on all Nintendo Switch 2 systems. A special GameChat Open Access period allows users to access the service without a Nintendo Switch Online subscription until March 31, 2026. After this period, an active subscription will be required for online chat functionalities.[10]
Reception
[edit]Pre-launch coverage of GameChat has been largely positive. IGN commented that "Everything Nintendo Switch 2 voice chat is able to do remains unclear, but it already looks leaps and bounds better than the previous Switch voice chat option that required the use of a mobile app."[11]
