The Galena Complex is a silver and lead mining operation located in the Silver Valley of Shoshone County, Idaho, United States, owned and operated by Draft:Americas Gold & Silver.[3] One of the largest underground silver mines in North America, it has produced over 240 million ounces of silver since its discovery in 1887, with peak production exceeding 5 million ounces annually in the early 2000s.[3][4] The complex comprises the Galena, Coeur, and Caladay mines, employing conventional and mechanized cut-and-fill mining methods with a 700-ton-per-day mill.[5][6]

History

[edit]

Discovered in 1887, the Galena Complex began significant modern mining in 1947 under the American Smelting and Refining Company (Asarco), initially extracting silver-copper ore before transitioning to silver-lead ore post-2014.[4][7] The Coeur mine operated from 1976 to 1997 and was rehabilitated in 2007 for silver-lead processing.[4] In 2014, Scorpio Mining Corporation (later Americas Silver Corporation) acquired U.S. Silver & Gold Inc., securing a 60% stake in the Galena Complex.[8][9] In December 2024, Americas Gold & Silver acquired the remaining 40% interest from Eric Sprott’s affiliate for 170 million shares and $10 million in cash, achieving full ownership.[3] The agreement included monthly silver deliveries of 18,500 ounces starting January 2026 for 36 months.[3] Paul Andre Huet was appointed CEO and Chairman to lead operational enhancements.[10] In June 2025, the company secured US$100 million in debt financing to support upgrades at the complex.[11] == Geology == The Galena Complex is hosted in metamorphosed Precambrian sedimentary rocks of the Belt Supergroup within the Coeur d’Alene mining district.[7] Silver, lead, and copper are extracted from high-grade vein deposits, with 2023 exploration intercepts including 3,172 g/t silver and 3.8% copper over 1.4 meters and 5,665 g/t silver over 0.9 meters.[9] In 2025, drilling identified a high-grade extension of the 149 Vein, with intercepts up to 24,913 g/t silver and 16.9% copper over 0.21 meters.[12] These findings suggest potential for extended mine life.[9] Antimony is present in the ores, primarily in tetrahedrite, and has been a historical byproduct with over 20 million pounds produced since 2001.[1][2][13]

Operations

[edit]

The Galena Complex employs conventional and mechanized cut-and-fill mining, supported by a 700-ton-per-day mill processing silver-lead ore.[5][6] In 2024, it produced 1.5 million ounces of silver and 10 million pounds of lead, with Q3 output at approximately 323,000 ounces of silver and 2.6 million pounds of lead.[5][6] As of 2023, reserves were estimated at 26.9 million ounces of silver equivalent.[6] Exploration in 2023–2024 focused on the Caladay and 360 Complex zones, identifying high-grade silver-copper veins.[9] In 2025, shaft repairs began on the Galena and Coeur shafts, set to complete in 2025, to increase hoisting capacity.[14] Five new pieces of mining equipment were ordered for delivery in Q1 2025 to enhance productivity.[14] Metallurgical tests in 2025 achieved over 90% antimony recovery in May and over 99% extraction from copper concentrate in September, supporting potential US antimony production.[15][16][1][17] The complex targets 2 million ounces of silver annually through these upgrades and exploration.[18]
