History

[edit]

GBTEC was founded by Gregor Greinke and Marc-Oliver Stromberg in 2005 and started out by providing BPM consulting services and developing add-ons for existing BPM tools.[3]

In 2007, GBTEC began developing its own software and introduced its first standalone software for Business Process Modeling.[3]

In 2015, GBTEC reported its most successful year in the company’s history as it more than doubled its revenue and expanded its workforce by 30%.[3][4]

In 2017, GBTEC continued to experience rapid growth and developed a groundbreaking cloud-based BPM solution called BPM suite BIC Cloud.[3]

In 2019, GBTEC established a joint venture with imatia (a Spanish business software company)[5] to form GBTEC Software S.L., allowing GBTEC to serve the spanish-speaking markets. It also gained Main Capital as a financial investor[6], further accelerating its growth. In the same year, GBTEC announced plans for a new office building in Bochum[7], and opened its first location outside Europe in Brisbane, Australia.

In 2020, GBTEC acquired avedos, a Vienna-based GRC software provider[8]. This acquisition allowed GBTEC to add capabilities in governance, risk, and compliance management to its portfolio. In the same year, GBTEC introduced a new product called BIC Process Execution, which powers workflow automation. It also invested in Apromore[9], a process mining provider, further expanding the company’s portfolio to include Process Mining. These added capabilities drove the rebranding of BPM suite BIC Cloud to BIC platform[3].

In 2021, Michael Dierks joined GBTEC as a board member and COO[10], forming the executive board together with Gregor Greinke, and officially opened its doors to the new office in Bochum.

In 2023, as part of GBTEC’s internationalization strategy, U.S. private equity firm The Carlyle Group (Carlyle) acquired a majority stake in GBTEC[11], acquiring it from Main Capital Partners. Gregor Greinke remained CEO and the largest private shareholder. GBTEC also launched the GBTEC Academy Learning Hub, expanding its e-learning offerings and giving users on-demand access to educational videos about its product.[3].

In 2024, GBTEC opened new locations in the US[12] and UK, marking a significant milestones in the company's global expansion strategy and launched “Arty”, a built-in AI assistant for the BIC Platform[3]. In the same year, Dieter Klaus joined as CFO.[13] [14]

In 2025, GBTEC launch an enterprise architecture management tool called BIC EAM[15], uniting business process management and IT processes under one roof. It also added Daniel Simon as CMO to its leadership team.[16][17]

Published Studies

[edit]
Process Excellence Key Factors

In August 2025, GBTEC commissioned a global study that explored how prepared organizations were for automation and AI. The study drew on insights from 600 senior business and operations leaders across ANZ, Europe, and North America, and identified challenges, opportunities, and best practices for organizations seeking to thrive in the era of automation and agentic AI.

The main finding from the study was that while nearly all organizations were investing in AI and automation, only less than 20% attained the highest level of process maturity known as “AI-powered”[18].  The study also found that Process Excellence was the missing link in ensuring that companies were prepared for the digital age, and identified the following six factors for achieving process excellence:

  • Process Maturity
  • Process Governance
  • Enterprise Architecture Alignment
  • Integrated Governance, Risk, and Compliance
  • Automation Readiness
  • AI Enablement
