Format rights is an informal concept in intellectual property law that covers rights to the format of a work such as a television show. The rights asserted to exist cross a wide variety of legal concepts, including copyright, trademarks, trade secrets, breach of contract, breach of confidentiality and passing off.
An entire business of format licensing is built on these concepts.
