Fahad Samar is a well-known filmmaker, bestselling author, widely-read columnist, film critic and culture, food & lifestyle writer.

Biography

Fahad Samar was born in 1968 and studied at Bombay International School, Mumbai, India.

He graduated from St. Xavier’s college with a degree in English Literature in 1985.

Fahad lives in Mumbai with his wife Simone Singh, the film and television actor.

Early Career

Fahad began his international film career with Merchant Ivory Productions and worked on several Oscar winning films such as A Room with a View, Howards End, and The Remains of the Day.

Fahad has also worked on such acclaimed international feature films as The Perfect Murder, The Deceivers and In Custody.

Fahad scripted a short film, The Doll’s Wedding for Merchant Ivory Productions which has been telecast on Channel 4 in the UK and Canal Plus Television in France.

Fahad is also the best-selling author of two novels, Scandal Point and Flash Point, published by Harper Collins.

Both Scandal Point [1] and Flash Point [2] have received rave critical reviews and have been optioned by leading web platforms to be adapted into major web series.

Career as a Film and TV Writer, Director and Producer

Fahad has, over the past 15 years, written, directed and produced several commercials, television shows, documentaries and public service films for the Indian and international market under his production company, Bombay Talkie.

Some of Bombay Talkie’s productions include:

  • Over 80 commercials for products as diverse as City Walk shoes, Revlon, Atco, Fantasy Land, BPL mobile phones, Ceat and Olivia cosmetics.
  • Two documentaries on the river Ganges and the Narmada which were screened at the Venice Film Festival.
  • A documentary on the history of the dhurrie, commissioned by Shyam Ahuja and shot on location in Benares, Rajasthan, Paris and New York. The internationally renowned tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain scored the music for this film, produced and directed by Fahad.
  • BPL OYE – the internationally acclaimed top 20 count down show on Channel V was produced and directed by Fahad from March 1994 thru Dec’1995 during which period it became the # 1 show on Channel V.
  • Fahad has directed 110 episodes of the cult TV show ‘Superhit Muqabla’, which was the highest rated programme on Indian television, watched by 50 million viewers each week.
  • An innovative pioneer in satellite TV programming, Fahad produced and directed ‘Startoon Top Ten’, India’s first animated television show, for the Star Plus channel.
  • Fahad has produced and co-directed the critically acclaimed film, ‘Jannat Talkies’ for Nine Broadcasting Ltd., starring Milind Soman, Bhakti Barve and Sohrab Ardeshir.
  • Fahad was Consultant Head of Programming at Entertainment Television Network (ETC), during which period it became the most- highly watched music channel in India.
  • Fahad’s original English film script, ‘India Unplugged’, has been bought by EMG Entertainment, UK for development into an international feature film.

Columnist, Culture, Food and Lifestyle Writer

Fahad is a well-known social commentator and has contributed columns regularly to the Mumbai Mirror, DNA, Bombay Times and the Indian Express over the past fifteen years. He wrote a widely-read national column for the Indian Express titled ‘Samar of Discontent’.

A gourmand and food writer, Fahad has been a main jury member for the coveted Conde Nast Traveller Best Restaurant of India Awards.

Fahad also wrote a popular column on food, wine and travel for Upper Crust magazine called Chow Bella.

Fahad’s articles and essays on culture, food and travel have appeared in Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue and Conde Nast Traveller, among other prestigious publications.

Fahad is actively involved with creating awareness about river water pollution and has made a 60 second public service film on the subject with Pandit Jasraj singing a specially composed hymn to the river Narmada.

Film Critic

Fahad is a Film Critic and a member of the Film Critic’s Guild.

He has hosted the popular film review show Friday Double Bill on NDTV Prime and also Filmology with Fahad Samar on Radio One 94.3 FM.
