FORED BC Society (commonly known as FORED) is a Canadian registered charity based in Vancouver, British Columbia. It provides sustainability education resources, professional development for teachers, and community programs focused on understanding forestry and resource management in British Columbia. The name is the short form of For Education about our environment and its natural resources.[2][3]

History

[edit]

FORED was founded in 1925 as the British Columbia Forestry Association by volunteers and forestry professionals from government, industry, and NGOs in British Columbia. FORED became a registered charity in 1967.[1] The association later became Forest Education B.C., and eventually FORED BC Society. FORED initially focused on forest fire prevention. Volunteers traveled across Canada promoting fire safety, including "FireSmart" initiatives, and maintained programs such as the Big Tree Registry, which was later transferred to UBC.[4]

In 1994, FORED published Landscapes, a print magazine targeting educators and communities.[5]

Programs

[edit]

FORED develops educational programs and community resources focused on sustainable natural resource management and environmental education. Its activities emphasize youth engagement and Indigenous partnerships.

  • AHEAD (Indigenous Heritage, Education & Dialogue): Provides educational materials, bursaries, and contests highlighting Indigenous knowledge and perspectives on sustainability.[6]
  • YES (Youth Engaging Sustainability): Supports youth-focused activities such as art contests and school events during National Forest Week.[7]

FORED also publishes educational resources used in British Columbia schools and teacher education programs.[8][9]
