EUTOPIA is a European alliance of ten universities engaged in collaboration to develop an inclusive and innovative academic environment.[1][2][3]. The alliance promotes cross-border collaboration in education, research, and innovation, with the aim of transforming higher education. In addition to its ten core members, EUTOPIA is associated with six global partner institutions and fifteen associate partners[1][2][3].

The alliance was established in response to the European Union's push to encourage deeper cooperation between universities across Europe. EUTOPIA is part of the broader “European Universities” initiative, launched in 2018 and supported by the European Commission[4][5]. There 65 alliances under this initiative, involving more than 570 higher education institutions across Europe[4].

EUTOPIA represents a large academic community, comprising:[1]

  • 163,968 undergraduate students
  • 82,677 master's students
  • 16,957 PhD candidates
  • 21,557 academic staff
  • 18,774 administrative staff
  • 154 faculties

Vision & Values

[edit]

EUTOPIA is a challenge-led, student-centred alliance of change-focused universities that place emphasis on openness and inclusion[6][7]. EUTOPIA's stated objective is to connect communities across campuses in order to develop its universities into open, inclusive, diverse, and innovative enablers for outreach impact on societies[6][7].

The alliance outlines its priorities in teaching, research, and innovation, with a stated focus on sustainable, responsible, and ethical practices.[8][7]. Collaboration and institutional openness are emphasised, along with a commitment to academic freedom in the conduct of research and education[8][7].

Initiatives

[edit]

EUTOPIA develops cross-institutional academic programs such as Connected Communities, which bring together students, researchers, and faculty from different institutions to co-create courses and share knowledge[9][10][11]. These communities focus on interdisciplinary collaboration and real-world issues[9][10][11].

The EUTOPIA Young Leaders Academy (YLA) is a professional development initiative for early- to mid-career researchers from partner universities[12][13][3][14]. The YLA members are appointed for a two-year period, and are between 2 to 12 years of their PhD completion[12][13][3][14].

The EUTOPIA Science and Innovation Post-Doctoral Fellowships program (EUTOPIA-SIF) aims to improve the research and career potential of young researchers by providing opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration, career development, and research mobility[15][16][17]. The initiative supports 76 postdoctoral researchers over five years in entrepreneurship and innovation[15][16][17].

Doctoral education within the alliance is facilitated through the PhD Co-Tutelle Program, which enables joint supervision of doctoral candidates by academics across EUTOPIA universities[18][19][20]. The program currently supports 67 PhD projects in all research areas and aims to broaden students' professional networks[18][19][21].

The EUTOPIA Impact Schools offer training for researchers to enhance the societal impact of their work, through interdisciplinary collaboration and capacity-building initiatives.[22][23]. This includes training programs focused on impact-driven research approaches and skills development workshops[22][23]

Students from EUTOPIA institutions also have access to summer and winter schools, exchange programs, and joint learning projects. The BeEUTOPIAn Conference, is a student-led annual seminar that focuses on global citizenship and interdisciplinary discussions on contemporary challenges[24][25][14]. The event includes skill-building activities aimed at encouraging community engagement[24][25][14].

ECOTOPIA is a 3-year undergraduate programme in business and economics that addresses sustainability and international collaboration[26][27][28]. The programme involves 8 partner universities and offers 1 year abroad and 2 international summer schools. Students receive a European certificate in addition to their national degree upon completion[26][27][28].

The EUTOPIA Student Think Tank (EUSTT) is a student-led initiative that allows participants from across the alliance to contribute research, develop skills, and engage in policy discussions[29][30][14]. The platform provides publishing opportunities and practical training in areas related to public engagement and policy-making.[29][30][14].

EUTOPIA_HEALTH is a capacity-building project which aims to create a novel framework for the integrative academic management of health-related scientific areas.[31][32][33]. It brings together researchers, industry partners, students, and stakeholders from nine member universities. The project targets widening countries (Romania, Slovenia, and Portugal) and addresses disparities in research funding and publication, with the broader goal of advancing health innovation and institutional capabilities[31][32][34]
