ERMA TECH GROUP is an international maritime technology group specialising in environmental protection systems, decarbonisation technologies, water and wastewater treatment, and marine equipment and services.[1] The group was formally introduced in 2025 as a consolidation of existing companies active in maritime environmental engineering, including ERMA FIRST, Environmental Protection Engineering (EPE), RWO, Ecochlor, METIS Cyberspace Technology and other affiliates.[2][3]

ERMA TECH GROUP is headquartered in Greece and has offices in Europe, North America and Asia.[1][4]

History

[edit]

The origins of the group date to 1977 with the establishment of Environmental Protection Engineering (EPE) by Ioannis Polychronopoulos in Piraeus, Greece[5], providing marine environmental services and equipment.[6] In 2009, ERMA FIRST was founded by the daughter of Ioannis Polychronopoulos, Eleni Polychronopoulou, as a ballast water treatment system (BWTS) manufacturer.[7]

In 2019, ERMA FIRST acquired a controlling stake in METIS Cyberspace Technology, an Athens-based company specialising in digital performance monitoring and artificial intelligence for shipping.[8][9]

In subsequent years the group expanded through acquisitions and new technologies, including the German marine water treatment specialist RWO GmbH[10] and oneTANK in-tank BWTS in 2021[11] and the US-based BWTS manufacturer Ecochlor in 2024 [12][13].

In 2025, ERMA FIRST, Environmental Protection Engineering (EPE), RWO, Ecochlor, METIS and HASYTEC were unified under the ERMA TECH GROUP focusing on integrated solutions for green and decarbonised shipping.[14][15]

Operations

[edit]

Decarbonisation technologies

[edit]

ERMA TECH GROUP develops a range of systems aimed at improving vessel energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions[16], including the FLEX Series energy saving devices[17], the BLUE CONNECT shore power system, and the Carbon FIT onboard carbon capture system.[18]

The group is also active in performance monitoring and optimisation using artificial intelligence technology provided by METIS.[19]

Water and wastewater treatment

[edit]

Through ERMA FIRST, Ecochlor, RWO and related entities, ERMA TECH GROUP supplies ballast water treatment systems using filter-based and filterless technologies, electrochlorination and chlorine dioxide systems.[13][11] In 2020, ERMA FIRST obtained United States Coast Guard (USCG) type approval for its BWTS, complementing earlier IMO approvals.[20] In 2024, South Korea also approved the ballast water treatment system.[21]

RWO manufactures bilge water separators and wastewater treatment systems, while EPE and RWO provide sewage treatment and fresh water production solutions for a range of vessel types.[10][22]

Marine equipment and services

[edit]

ERMA TECH GROUP also offers marine equipment such as cathodic protection anodes and antifouling systems.

In 2025 the group announced the acquisition of ultrasonic antifouling technology developed by Hasytec.[23]
