Emily Greer is a notable figure in the video game industry, best known as the co-founder of Kongregate, a popular online game publishing platform that played a key role in the rise of browser-based and indie games. She helped launch the platform in 2006 alongside her brother Jim Greer. Kongregate became widely recognized for its user-friendly game submission system, developer revenue-sharing model, and strong community features such as badges and achievements. She’s well-respected for her insights into game development, business models, and the evolution of the free-to-play ecosystem.
Greer initially began her career in 1983 working in game finance. She was first introduced to Ultima III: Exodus, after her brother convinced her it was going to be the best game in the history of the world.[1].
In 1996, Greer graduated with honors a bachelor's degree in Russian and Eastern European Studies from Yale University. From her studies, she gained knowledge on medieval Transylvania[1].
Greer began her career in direct marketing and catalogs in 1996 working in Newbridge Communications. In 1997, she worked as circulation planned for Smith & Hawken. In 1999, she worked as House File Marketing Manager for Travelsmith Outfitters. In 2004, she worked as Director of Marketing for Gump's, where she is also credited for restarting their website from scratch[1][2]
In 2006, Emily Greer joined her brother, Jim Greer, in the initial product development and launch of Kongregate, a web gaming portal and video game publisher[3][4]. Her work as co-founder and COO included designing levels and points systems in games. "“Jim and I founded the company with the goal of helping small and independent game developers become successful, to help them find an audience, and compete in a crowded and complex gaming marketplace,” said Greer[5]. In February 2014, she took over the CEO role[1]. In June of 2014, she joined Ultrabit as a Board Member until February 2016. In February 2018, she joined the International Game Developers Association as Vice-Chair and Board Member before leaving in March 2021.
After leaving Kongregate in May of 2019[6], she founded Double Loop Games.
Greer was the first to win the GamesChangeHers Award in 2012. She was also named one of the 10 most powerful women in gaming by Fortune magazine in 2013.[3]
