Easy Functional Sizing (EFS) is a method for measuring the functional size of software, developed as an accessible alternative to traditional methods like Function Point Analysis (FPA). The method is designed to be simpler, faster, and more intuitive to apply while maintaining reliability and reproducibility. EFS is particularly suitable for agile environments where quick insight into the scope and complexity of software is desired.

Background

Easy Functional Sizing was developed by a working group within Nesma, an association that has been developing standards for software measurement since the 1980s. The need for EFS arose from practical experience where existing methods were perceived as too complex, time-consuming or difficult to scale, especially for agile projects or smaller customizations.

The first version of EFS was presented in 2023. The method has since been further refined and supported by documentation, examples and training. Since 2024, the first official version has been available.

Purpose and principles

The main principles of Easy Functional Sizing are:

  • Ease: The method should be easy to explain and apply.
  • Speed: Measurements should be quick to execute, so that they fit well into agile development cycles.
  • Functional perspective: EFS focuses on the functional user value of software, as visible and experienced by the user.
  • Objectivity: Despite simplicity, EFS should provide reproducible and transparent results.

Application

Easy Functional Sizing is applied in practice:

  • In agile software development, for example, as an alternative to story points;
  • In bids or contracts, where a neutral estimate of functional scope is needed;
  • For benchmarking and progress measurement of software projects;
  • As a training method to quickly become familiar with functional size thinking.

The method is also suitable for smaller modifications and maintenance work, for which traditional FPA is often considered too heavy.

Relationship to other methods

EFS is related to Nesma Function Point Analysis (FPA), the international standard for functional software measurement according to ISO/IEC 24570:2018.
