Matt Strauss is an American media executive who has served as Chairman of NBCUniversal Media Group since November 2024. He oversees NBC, Bravo, Peacock, NBC Sports, Affiliate Relations, Content Distribution, Advertising Sales & Partnerships, International Networks, and Decision Sciences. He previously led NBCUniversal’s direct-to-consumer and international streaming initiatives.

Early life and education

[edit]

Strauss earned a Bachelor of Science degree in finance and marketing from the Stern School of Business at New York University.[1]

Career

[edit]

Disney–ABC and Rainbow Media

[edit]

Strauss began his career in strategic planning at Disney–ABC before joining Rainbow Media (now AMC Networks), where he led early efforts in interactive and on-demand video, including launching Mag Rack, a pioneering video-on-demand service.[2]

Comcast

[edit]

In 2004, Strauss joined Comcast as Senior Vice President of New Media. He led the company’s on-demand product development, content licensing strategies, and helped position Comcast for the digital era.[3] He later became Executive Vice President of Video & Entertainment Services and was credited with helping Comcast post its first net gain in video subscribers in over a decade in 2016.[4]

As Executive Vice President of Xfinity Services, he oversaw product innovation for over 30 million customers, introducing the X1 voice remote, Flex streaming box, xFi home internet platform, gigabit broadband, and cloud DVR services.

NBCUniversal and Peacock

[edit]

Strauss joined NBCUniversal in 2019 to build and lead its streaming platform, Peacock. He was appointed Chairman of Direct-to-Consumer and International in 2020.[5]

Peacock officially launched on July 15, 2020, and expanded to over 70 countries. By early 2025, it had surpassed 41 million paid subscribers and over 100 million registered users.[6] In Q1 2025 alone, Peacock generated $1.5 billion in revenue (up 82% YoY) and narrowed losses to $436 million.[7]

Strauss positioned Peacock as a hybrid streaming platform focused on free and paid models, sports programming, and scalable advertising. “Advertising is the anchor to Peacock,” he said in 2024.[8] He also referred to FAST (free ad-supported streaming TV) as “the new linear.”[9]

In November 2024, Strauss was promoted to Chairman, NBCUniversal Media Group, with broader responsibility over advertising sales, sports, decision sciences, content distribution, and more.[10]

Board memberships

[edit]

Strauss is a board member of SkyShowtime, a streaming joint venture between Comcast and Paramount Global serving European markets.[11]

Leadership style

[edit]

Strauss is known for combining operational focus with long-term digital vision. He emphasizes product experience, scalability, and bundling strategy, particularly for ad-supported and live content.[8] His leadership has been described as pragmatic, data-informed, and innovation-driven.

Personal life

[edit]

Strauss resides in the New York metropolitan area with his spouse and four children.[1]
