Dirk Matak Fontein (1840 - 17 Mar 1912) was a military doctor in the Royal Netherlands Navy.

Biography

He was born in Ede, son of Willemina van Langeveld and Pieter Dirk Matak Fontein, who was also a doctor.

Dirk Matak Fontein was the naval medical officer during the Dutch Gold Coast expedition of 1869–70 on the war ship Amstel, off the coast of West Africa. He was known for his courage and advisory skills, as well as his attention to prevention and hygiene. The reception and care of victims and concern for the patient were very important to him.

Honours

He received the Military Order of William for his role in the expedition of 1869-1870.
