Draft:Diplomacy is Not an Option

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
  • Comment: Per VRXCES, this reception section needs work; none of the claims are attributed, and many of these sources are of debateable quality. There are also some unsubstantiated claims (Like that it was "critically acclaimed") that need proper sources to back them up. • Comment: The Reception section needs work: Steam scores are WP:USERG and usually not mentioned, and GameGrin and Phenixx Gaming are non-WP:RS and should also probably be removed. But there looks like there's a lot of reviews for this, so I think it should demonstrate notability soon. Could you focus on finessing the Reception section to add reviews from sources like those covered in WP:VG/S, based on the sources you can find from Metacritic and WP:VG/SE that fit the bill? Once that's ticked off, it seems pretty much good to go. VRXCES (talk) 05:15, 14 October 2025 (UTC)

Diplomacy is Not an Option is a real-time strategy game developed and published by Door 407 studio[1]. Inspired by 90s classics such as Stronghold and influenced by more modern base-defending sub-genre representatives[2](e.g. They are billions), the game was released in early access on February 9, 2022 for Microsoft Windows. It offers players to build medieval-like settlement, develop economy and manage army in order to fight off numerous enemies coming in waves. The full release took place on October 4, 2024[3] on Steam, GOG.com, and Epic Games Store.

Gameplay

[edit]

Diplomacy is Not an Option is a typical RTS-game with additions of survival, city-building, and tower defense[5] sub-genres' elements. Players need to explore maps, settle resource extraction, hire troops, conduct research and construct various buildings that improve a settlement's economy, defense, and population management. Enemies that mostly come in waves will try to destroy the main Player's building, the Townhall. Losing the Townhall leads to defeat. Victory conditions may vary, but usually include withstanding a certain number of enemy storm attempts.[6]

Plot

[edit]

Set in medieval fantasy world, Diplomacy is Not an Option tells a story about a minor feudal Lord of a fictional country of Samreignia, who is forced first to suppress a peasant uprising[7] and then sets off on a journey in search of gold to an Uncharted Continent. During his adventures, he may switch sides: join the Rebellion, side with natives of the distant Continent, or become undead. Switching sides has a significant impact on gameplay. It affects the unit roster, mission goals, and story ending.[8]

Reception

[edit]

Upon Early Access launch, Diplomacy is Not an Option was among top 20 best-selling games on Steam[10]. In general, players and reviewers praise the visual low-poly style, the optimization[11], the "tongue-in-cheek"[12] story, and the satisfying feeling of hard-gained victories[13]. However, there are many complaints about the high difficulty level of the game, the slow-paced cutscenes[14], and the in-game balance issues, such as sudden difficulty spikes.
