Draft:Digital Presence

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Digital Presence (German: digitale Präsenz) is a theoretical concept in media philosophy and aesthetics coined by the Swiss-Colombian artist and philosopher Juan Mauricio Schmid Bello in his 2022 work, Eingang/Ausgang.

The concept defines Digital Presence as the **dominant social and performative practice** of the 21st century. It describes the individual's form of existence within the Transmedial Space and is an integral component of the Social Architecture of the Smart Polis. Schmid Bello argues that the ability for constant display and performative presence in the digital network is an essential feature of the Transmodern age.[1]

Function and Context

[edit]

Digital Presence is to be understood in the context of the Transmodern epoch, where the traditional separation between art and everyday life, as well as subject and object, blurs.

Social Media as the Site of Presence

[edit]

Digital Presence primarily manifests on social platforms (such as Instagram, YouTube, etc.), which Schmid Bello views as the **most popular artistic practice of the present**, provided the Performativity of the practice is understood in concordance with presence.[2]

  • Active Role: Digital Presence proves that all individuals in the network act as **Users-Individuals**, whose technical means enable constant display and performative presence.
  • Proof of Existence: Presence becomes the primary proof of existence in the digitized environment and is directly connected to the emergence of Nomadism as a pluridimensional existential strategy.

Connection to Performative Intervention

[edit]

Digital Presence is the **prerequisite** and the medium for the Performative Intervention. Only through the conscious exercise of Digital Presence can the individual: 1. **Generate truth** and create Coining Knowledge (cultural capital). 2. Transform themselves from the passive, **subjectified individual** to the politically capable **Autonomous Individual** (as the goal of the Inframedial Transformation).

Consequence of Transmediality

[edit]

Digital Presence is a direct consequence of the Transmedial Space, which is created by the Nomadic Internet. Since all information is translated into a digital code (Inframediality), Digital Presence becomes the dominant form of representation that goes beyond mere depiction. This leads to the **Historization of Social Media** by overcoming the fiction of images through the simultaneous generation of location- and witness-supported data.[3]
