Dig Deeper (2023) is a black comedy short film written and directed by Girault Seger, starring Victor Williams and Lee Wilkof. It premiered at Newport Beach Film Festival in 2023, and went on to screen at Soho International Film Festival, New York Indie Shorts, Tennessee International Indie Fest, and AMT Film Festival. It earned several awards including a Jury Award for Best Narrative Short (NBFF), 1st Place Grand Prize (AMTFF), Audience Award Nominee (SIIFF), and Best Actor (AMTFF) for Victor Williams.
Plot
[edit]The film follows a grave digger named Gerry who takes great care in his work and seeks appreciation for his craftsmanship. He struggles with a lack of self-worth due to the absence of praise. Gerry shows up at funerals looking for some sign of gratitude from the people there for the grave he has dug, but is ignored and overlooked. In turn, he meditates and reads self-help books to achieve more inner peace. An older man named Sylvester shows up at the cemetery one day and showers Gerry with praise for his expert grave digger. Gerry is thrilled to be appreciated, but is shocked by Sylvester's request; that Gerry digs his grave.
Development
[edit]The screenplay for Dig Deeper won a number of awards including 1st Place Short at Slamdance Film Festival's Screenwriting Competition. Lucca De Oliveira joined as an executive producer, followed by Victor Williams as executive producer and lead.
