Detectify is a Swedish cybersecurity company that provides an advanced application security testing platform, primarily focusing on DAST[1] and ASM.[2] Founded in Stockholm, Sweden in 2013 by Mathias Karlsson, Rickard Carlsson, David Hallenius, Johan Edholm, and Fredrik Nordberg Almroth, Detectify helps organizations discover and monitor their internet-facing applications and assets for vulnerabilities.[3] Rickard Carlsson serves as the CEO.[4] The company was acquired by Insight Partners on October 28, 2024.[5]

History

[edit]

Detectify was founded in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2013 by a team of ethical hackers and security experts.[6] The company's initial focus was on automating web application security testing.[6] Their approach involves leveraging a community of elite ethical hackers to identify the latest vulnerabilities, which are then integrated into their automated scanning platform.[5]

Over the years, Detectify has secured significant funding to support its growth and product development:

  • March 4, 2015: The company completed its first funding round.[7]
  • November 2019: Detectify raised a Series B round of $23.1 million (€21.5 million). This round was led by Balderton Capital, with participation from existing investors Paua Ventures, Inventure, and Insight Partners.[8]
  • September 29, 2022: Detectify secured an additional $10 million in a Series C funding round, led by Insight Partners.[9] In total, Detectify has raised $42.1 million over five funding rounds from investors including Insight Partners, Inventure, Balderton Capital, and Paua Ventures.[3]

In a significant development for the company, Detectify was acquired by Insight Partners on October 28, 2024.[5] Balderton Capital remained a minority stakeholder.[10]

Products and Services

[edit]

Detectify offers an advanced application security testing platform primarily focused on DAST[1], alongside ASM.[2] The platform conducts continuous, payload-based attacks to identify vulnerabilities in internet-facing applications and assets.[5]

Their core products are:

  • Application Scanning: This service provides in-depth web application testing, functioning as a DAST solution to identify and help remediate critical vulnerabilities in custom-built web applications. It supports authenticated testing and utilizes advanced crawling and fuzzing techniques to uncover issues.[11]
  • Surface Monitoring: This product focuses on continuous external asset tracking. It automatically discovers and monitors an organization's internet-facing assets, such as websites and subdomains, providing visibility into their external attack surface and identifying vulnerabilities. It performs subdomain discovery, scans ports, and assesses SSL/TLS certificates among other functions.[11]

Detectify's platform integrates several key features:

  • Asset Classification: The system automatically classifies discovered web assets based on attributes like libraries, forms, and headers, mimicking attacker reconnaissance techniques. This feature helps security teams prioritize and categorize assets for further investigation and testing.[12]
  • Scan Recommendations: Based on asset classification, Detectify provides intelligent suggestions for web applications to test based on their classification and perceived attractiveness to attackers. It identifies which applications require thorough deep crawling and fuzzing with DAST, aiding in efficient resource allocation for AppSec teams.[12]
  • Detectify Crowdsource: This platform integrates security research from a global community of ethical hackers directly into Detectify's automated scanning engines.[8] This crowdsourced vulnerability data helps the platform remain updated with the latest threats and ensures comprehensive coverage against emerging exploits.[13]
  • Detectify Alfred: An AI system that automates the process of sourcing, prioritizing, and generating high-fidelity security tests for CVEs.[14] This AI-driven capability is reviewed by humans to ensure accuracy and reduce false positives.[15]
