Deepnil Ray is an Indian aspiring astrophysicist, asteroid hunter, and student researcher known for his work in asteroid discovery and astrobiology research. He is currently pursuing his studies at Ashoka University, Delhi, and serves as Deputy Chief Executive Officer at NoRCEL (Network of Researchers on the Chemical Emergence of Life) Global.^[1]

Early life and education

Ray attended DAV Public School in Asansol, India, where he achieved recognition as a top student nationally.^[2] He is currently a student at Ashoka University in Delhi, where he is involved with the university's astronomy society.

Academic achievements

Ray is a three-time national topper at the Vikram Sarabhai Science Foundation's SPOT 100 program, where he was the only senior student from West Bengal to be selected for two consecutive years.^[3] He has also been recognized as a national topper at the BRICSMATH competition.

Research and publications

Ray has authored several research papers on topics including astrobiology, ethics in autonomous vehicles, and asteroid characterization. His notable publications include:

Ray is an active astrophotographer whose nebula photographs have been featured twice on the Open University's telescope.org website newsletter, earning him best photo awards on consecutive attempts.^[10] He participates in citizen science projects through Zooniverse, where he classifies potential exoplanet signals from NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) data and black hole signals. He has also contributed to recording audiobooks for visually impaired individuals through Samarthanam.^[11]

Public speaking

Despite initially being apprehensive about public speaking, Ray has spoken with notable figures including the Honorable Governor of Kerala, Mohammed Arif Khan, the Director of CBSE, and former ISRO Chairman G. Madhavan Nair.^[12]
