Daniel Maté is a Canadian composer, lyricist, and playwright for musical theatre based in BC and New York.[1][2] He wrote the music and lyrics for multiple musicals, winning him the Jonathan Larson Grant and the ASCAP Foundation's Cole Porter Award in 2010 as well as the Kleban Prize for promising musical theater lyricist in 2013.[3]

Books

[edit]

He is also known for his work with his father Dr. Gabor Maté, the well-known physician, author, and Jewish anti-Zionist. They co-wrote the book The Myth of Normal: Trauma, Illness, & Healing in a Toxic Culture, an analysis of how Western society causes physical and mental illness, and how ignoring this toxicity fundamentally hinders Western Medicine's ability to treat this illness.[4][5] Their work together continues including a workshop under the name "Hello Again: A Fresh Start for Parents and Their Adult Children," as well as an announced co-authored book and podcast.[6][7]

Media appearances

[edit]

Sometimes with his father and his brother journalist Aaron, he has been outspoken as a Jewish anti-Zionist and pro-Palestine activist.[8][9][10] Particularly since the beginning of the Israel-Hamas War, he has been appearing in a number of podcasts, live-streams, and interviews with his family and other Jewish and Palestinian activists.[11]

Bad Hasbara podcast

[edit]

He has since become the regular co-host of the podcast "Bad Hasbara" with comedian actor and activist Matt Lieb.[12] The Jewish anti-Zionist podcast has a uniquely humorous tone for the topic, often making fun of hypocrisy on behalf of the IDF and the Israeli state.[13][14] Using comedy such as parody songs and use of a soundboard.[citation needed] Daniel's co-host Matt Leib was interviewed on Al Jazeera's The Stream about Israeli public diplomacy in the Gaza war.[13][14]
