Daniel Valentin Marx (*12.08.1990 in Landshut;) is a German guitarist, researcher and lecturer.

Education

Marx began playing the guitar at the age of seven in Erding, Germany. He studied with Susanne Schoeppe in Munich and with Roberto Aussel at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln, where he completed his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees with distinction.

Supported by a Thornton Scholarship, he continued his studies at the University of Southern California - Thornton School of Music, working with members of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet and Pepe Romero. In 2019, he received the Doctoral College Studentship Award which allowed him to start a PhD at the International Guitar Research Centre (IGRC) of the University of Surrey (UK), which he successfully concluded in 2025.[1]

Career

Marx has won more than twelve international competitions, awards and scholarships in Europe and the United States, including prizes in Greece, Italy, Germany, England and the USA. He made his orchestral debut at the age of 17 as soloist with the Erding Chamber Orchestra. His concert appearances have taken him throughout Europe, North and South America, Australia, and Asia[2][3]. He has performed at venues including the Bing Theater of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (USA), the Apollon Theater (Greece), the Hakuju Hall (Japan), the Vallisa Auditorium (Italy), and the WDR Funkhaus Wallraffplatz (Germany). Recordings and Reception

Marx has recorded three albums released by the labels GENUIN classics[8] and NAXOS[9]. His performances have been widely praised by the international press. The German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung described him as an “exceptional talent,” while the German classical music blog Klassikblog Ouverture highlighted his “technical mastery” and “fascinating expressive abilities.” The American Classical Guitar Magazine praised his recording as “a lovely disc very well-achieved.” The Italian Associazione Musicale Culturale Nino Rota stated that “Daniel Marx has everything a guitarist needs – a warm and strong sound, precision, focus and above all lots of expressivity.” Marx has appeared in broadcasts for e.g. BR, WDR, Radio Nacional Argentina, 3ZZZ Radio Melbourne, Classical KUSC, Radio Vaticana Italia, SBS Radio Australia[10], and the Franco-German television network Arte.[11][12]

Academic Work

Daniel Marx is a frequent guest at international conferences. He is part of the Cambridge Cohort for Guitar Research and organizer of the Lake Konstanz Conference for Guitar Research[13], alongside Gerhard Penn and Andreas Stevens. His works are published by editor Les Productions d'Oz, where he has his own series. He serves as a guitar lecturer at UTE Thurgau (Switzerland) and was visiting professor at the Conservatory “Nino Rota” & "Franco Vittadini" in Monopoli & Pavia, Italy.[14][15][16][17]
