Crystal Yang is an American social entrepreneur and researcher. She is the founder and CEO of Audemy, a nonprofit platform that develops audio-based learning tools for students who are blind or visually impaired.[1][2] She was named the global winner of the Intel AI Global Impact Festival and founded Katy Youth Hacks, a hackathon for accessibility.[3][4]

Early life and education

[edit]

Crystal graduated from Obra D. Tompkins High School and is enrolled in the Jerome Fisher Program in Management and Technology at the University of Pennsylvania.[5]

Career

[edit]

Crystal founded Audemy, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization after identifying a lack of accessible educational games for blind students. The idea was inspired by a blind classmate who could not participate in a game of Wordle. In interviews, Crystal has stated that Audemy was founded in response to the academic disparities faced by blind students, noting that an estimated 70% are at least one grade level behind their peers.[6][7]

Crystal also founded Katy Youth Hacks, a student-led hackathon with a focus on accessibility technology.[8] It has featured speakers and judges from organizations such as Google, Amazon, and Meta Platforms.[9]

Audemy reported receiving more than $200,000 in support from organizations such as Intel, Google, The Hershey Company, Desmos, and Taco Bell.[10] As of July 2025, Audemy stated that its platform had reached over 10,000 blind students in 66 countries and was being used in 36 state schools for the blind in the United States.[11][12]

Audemy and Crystal have been profiled in outlets such including Fox News, NPR, Intel News, Community Impact, The CW, and Yahoo.[13][5][1]

Research

[edit]

Crystal has co-authored peer-reviewed research related to accessibility, human–computer interaction (HCI), and AI-based education tools. Her publications include:

  • "AI for Accessible Education: Personalized Audio-Based Learning for Blind Students", presented at the CHI 2025 Workshop on Augmented Educators and AI.[14]
  • "An Audiotactile System for Accessible Graphs on a Coordinate Plane", published in the companion proceedings of the 2024 International Conference on Multimodal Interaction (ICMI).[15]
  • "HEARD-LE: An Intelligent Conversational Interface for Wordle", co-authored with researchers from Texas A&M University and published in the proceedings of ICMI 2023.[16][17]

Her work has been included in the Stanford SCALE Initiative's Generative AI for Education repository,[18] and she is listed as a contributor in the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).[19]

Recognitions and accolades

[edit]

Yang has received several recognitions, including the George H. W. Point of Light Award in 2024,[20] the Yellow Rose of Texas Award from Governor Greg Abbott, and the global winner designation at the 2024 Intel AI Global Impact Festival.[21] She has also been recognized as an NCWIT National Honoree,[22][23] spoken at events hosted by the United Nations Civil Society program, ISTE, and the Association for Computing Machinery.[24]
