A Pioneer of Photography in Jaffna: Remembering Arlumpalam Kugathasan Arlumpalam Kugathasan, a name synonymous with photography in Jaffna, established his renowned studio in the 1960s. After completing his polytechnic studies in Chennai, India, he returned to Sri Lanka with a vision to revolutionize the industry in his hometown. At a time when modern printing techniques were scarce, Mr. Kugathasan mastered the intricate art of block-making, a process crucial for newspaper photo printing. This skill, previously exclusive to highly trained professionals in Colombo, allowed him to produce blocks within hours, eliminating the lengthy delays previously faced by Jaffna residents.
Mr. Kugathasan's studio further distinguished itself by offering color film developing and printing services, another innovation previously limited to Colombo. Utilizing renowned brands like Konica, Kodak, and Agfa, he brought vibrant color photography to the people of Jaffna. His pioneering spirit and dedication to his craft cemented his studio's legacy until 1996.
Beyond his technical prowess, Mr. Kugathasan was a respected employer who provided fair wages and support to his staff of over 45 employees. He fostered a culture of entrepreneurship, encouraging and assisting five of his staff members in establishing their own studios in Jaffna.
Mr. Kugathasan, who passed away in August 1998, left behind a lasting impact on the photography landscape of Jaffna. He is survived by his wife Nesammah and children Sobana and Kannan, who currently reside in London. His legacy as a skilled technician, successful entrepreneur, and generous mentor continues to inspire.
