Catenda is a European software company specializing in Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Common Data Environment (CDE) solutions for the construction and infrastructure sectors. Its cloud-based platform, Catenda Hub (formerly Bimsync), has been used in various construction, infrastructure and public-sector projects.[1] These include deployment by Egis Group on transportation projects such as the Grand Paris Express, the Lyon Metro Line B extension, and the Marseille tramway in France.[2][3]; by the Free State of Bavaria for building and transport infrastructure projects in Germany. [4]

Catenda was founded in 2009 as a spin-off from SINTEF, one of Europe's largest independent research organizations.[5]

Catenda is also a multinational member of buildingSMART[6] and has contributed to the development of openBIM standards, including IFC, BCF and the BuildingSMART Data Dictionary.[7]

History

[edit]
  • 2009 – Founded in Oslo by five data science engineers as a spin-off from SINTEF Building and Infrastructure.[8]
  • 2017 – Secured investment from OBOS and Veidekke.[9]
  • 2019 – Secured investment from Spring Capital Polaris.[10]
  • 2022 – Underwent a comprehensive rebranding: Bimsync became Catenda Hub, Site Tool became Catenda Site, Catenda API became Catenda Boost, and Catenda BOS became Catenda Duo.[11]
  • 2024 – Acquired by private equity firm GRO after Spring Capital exited its investment.[12][13]

Products

[edit]

Catenda develops software solutions for Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Common Data Environments (CDE). Its product portfolio includes:[14]

Catenda Hub

A cloud-based CDE platform that enables collaboration among stakeholders in construction and infrastructure projects. It supports openBIM standards, IFC and BCF, centralized document management, issue tracking, role-based access, and integrations with tools such as Nova Ava and Simple Bim.[15]

Catenda Site

A mobile application for field teams to access and update project data, with offline functionality and synchronization with Catenda Hub.

Catenda Duo

A facility management tool that integrates BIM models into building management systems, enabling asset tracking and maintenance scheduling using digital twin technology.[16]

Catenda Boost

A set of APIs and developer tools for building custom solutions or extending the Catenda platform.

Security and compliance

[edit]

Catenda Hub is certified under ISO/IEC 27001, covering secure storage, processing, and transmission of project data. The platform offers role-based access control, secure authentication, and regular security audits.[17]

Partnerships

[edit]

Catenda has engaged in partnerships and industry standardization efforts:

  • Partnered with Egis Group on integrating CityGML into Catenda Hub, used in cities such as Lyon, Strasbourg, Berlin, Rotterdam, and New York.[18]
  • Multinational member of buildingSMART International, contributing to the development of open BIM standards (IFC, BCF, BuildingSMART Data Dictionary).[19]

Catenda’s founders were active in building information modelling (BIM) standardization before the company was established in 2009. The company holds a central position in the developing bodies for both the IFC, BCF and bSDD standards.[20] Co-founder Håvard Bell was recognized as a buildingSMART International Fellow in 2020 for his work on the BuildingSMART Data Dictionary, where he served as technical lead from 2006 to 2015, as well as for his contributions to the IFC standard in relation to BuildingSMART Data Dictionary.[21]

The company also created the first cloud-based API for the bSDD in partnership with the Product Room Steering Committee, later hosted on Google App Engine.[22] By 2018, buildingSMART International had assumed full control of the source code but continued to rely on Catenda’s technical expertise.[23]
