CarbonChain is a UK-based software company that provides tools for calculating and reporting supply-chain greenhouse-gas emissions, with an emphasis on Scope 3 data for carbon-intensive sectors.[1] Founded in 2019, the company has reported customers in commodities, manufacturing and finance, and its methodology has been reviewed by third-party assurance firms.[2]
History
[edit]CarbonChain was founded in London in 2019 by Adam Hearne and Roheet Shah.[3][4] It took part in Y Combinator’s Summer 2020 cohort and closed a seed round later that year.[5]
In October 2021, the insurer Tokio Marine Kiln said it would use CarbonChain’s data to inform parts of its underwriting process, following a pilot through Lloyd’s Lab.[6] In April 2023, CarbonChain raised US$10 million in Series A funding co-led by Union Square Ventures and Voyager Ventures to expand product development and hiring, including a planned New York presence.[7][8]
Products and services
[edit]CarbonChain offers a software platform that compiles activity-based and asset-level data to estimate emissions along supply chains, producing corporate and product-level footprints for reporting and risk analysis.[9] In 2024, the company launched “CarbonChain Comply,” adding a reporting hub and tools aimed at compliance with frameworks including the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).[10] Tech.eu has reported that CarbonChain’s methodology has been verified by Bureau Veritas and validated by SGS for alignment with greenhouse-gas accounting standards.[11]
