C&D Technologies is a manufacturer of stationary energy storage and backup batteries. The company produces flooded (or wet cell) lead acid batteries, and Valve Regulated Lead Acid, or VRLA batteries, including absorbent glass mat (AGM) batteries, and gel batteries. They also offer battery racks, cabinets, and chargers.
Stationary batteries serve in uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems in data centers, telecom, internet and cable service providers, utilities and energy infrastructure, industrial power backup, and other applications. They are also used in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) for solar and renewable energy applications, including grid-tied and off-grid.
The CEO as of 2025 is Rick Heller.[1]
Products
[edit]C&D Technologies manufactures batteries and custom battery systems under the C&D brand. Battery types include flooded lead acid batteries, absorbent glass mat (AGM) batteries, and pure lead AGM batteries.
History
[edit]C&D Technologies was founded in 1916 by Frank Carlile and Leon Doughty, graduates of Philadelphia’s Manual Training School (now Northeast High School). C&D stands for Carlile and Doughty, who met in 1906 when they won a contract to electrify their school.
Initially, C&D Technologies manufactured batteries for automobiles. During World War II, the company began developing industrial batteries, expanding into battery systems for the communications industry.
In 1955, C&D Technologies opened a manufacturing plant in Attica, Indiana, which is still in operation as of 2025 producing lead acid batteries. In 2000, C&D Technologies purchased a manufacturing plant in Reynosa, Tamaulipas in Mexico, formerly owned by Panasonic.[2] The Reynosa plant is still in operation as of 2025 and produces lead acid batteries.
The C&D Technologies headquarters is currently located in Horsham, Pennsylvania.
Acquisitions and joint ventures
[edit]C&D acquired the Dynasty brand of the industrial battery division of Johnson Controls and its manufacturing facility in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1999.[3]
In 2001, C&D Technologies announced the acquisition of the Newport Components Division of Newport Technology Group Ltd. The components division operated factories in the UK and China.[4]
Celab Power, a UK-based manufacturer of power conversion products, and Datel, a Massachusetts-based manufacturer of DC/DC converters and other components, were acquired by C&D in 2004.[5]
C&D Technologies sold its Power Electronics Division (PED) to Murata Manufacturing Co. Ltd. of Japan in 2007. The PED developed and manufactured electric components such as converters, inductors, and transformers.[6]
In 2017, C&D Technologies was acquired by KPS Capital Partners, an American investment firm based in New York City, New York.[7]
C&D Technologies acquired Trojan Battery Company in 2018.[8] [9]
