Business in a Box is a cloud-based business management software solution developed by Biztree Inc. The platform is designed as an all-in-one business operating system that brings together collaborative productivity apps such as project and task management, live communications, AI-powered assistants, document templates, file storage, and HR management, in a unified workspace made for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).[1]
The company reports presence in over 190 countries and a user base of hundreds of thousands of businesses.[2]
History
[edit]Business in a Box was founded in 2002 by Bruno Goulet and Jonathan Defoy in Montreal, originally operating under the corporate name Envision SBS (Smart Business Solutions). The founding motivation was to ease the burden of drafting business and legal documents for small businesses a problem the founders had personally experienced in their previous roles. They worked 90 hours per week for a year, purchased content rights, and engaged lawyers and consultants to build the most complete library of document templates. The first version of the product launched on October 30th, 2002.
Key developmental milestones include:
- October 2002 – First version of Business in a Box released.
- December 2006 – Biztree Inc. becomes the corporate name.
- December 2011 – Major partnerships with HP, Lenovo and Microsoft.
- March 2013 – Business in a Box reaches 6 million downloads.
- July 2015 – Release of Business in a Box version 7.0.
- July 2017 – Bruno bought out all the shareholders of Biztree.
- September 2018 – Launch of Business in a Box Online SaaS.
- September 2020 – Start of the development for the Business in a Box Apps Platform.
- March 2023 – Launch of Business in a Box Cloud Drive, expanding into the Document Management market[3]
- January 2024 – The template library surpasses 3,000 business and legal documents.[4]
- February 2025 – Release of all-in-one business collaboration platform featuring 14 apps such as Templates, Docs, Sheets, Drive, Projects & Tasks, Live Chat, Video Calls, Inbox, HR Management, Contacts, Notes, Links, and Business AI.[5]
Over the years, the company has expanded its global distribution, added multilingual support, mobile and desktop clients, and shifted from a document library to a fully-fledged enterprise cloud productivity suite.
Platform and applications
[edit]The Business in a Box platform delivers a suite of integrated applications to cover core business operations:
- Dashboard – Personal Dashboard to Increase Productivity of Every Employee.
- Projects & Tasks – Planning and execution software including boards, tasks, milestones, deadlines, and progress tracking.
- Business AI – Integrated AI assistant with over 10,000 prompt templates to automate work, generate documents, provide insights, and support decision-making.
- HR Management – Employee profiles, time-tracking, leave management, self-service app, performance reviews, salary history, dashboards, and templates.
- Templates – Library of more than 3,000 business and legal document templates (contracts, policies, plans, proposals, etc).

This integrated approach aims to replace the “tool-stack” fragmentation typical in many small and mid-sized businesses, consolidating multiple functionalities into one platform. [1]
Key features
[edit]According to independent review platforms, Business in a Box includes:
- Task & project management with boards, progress tracking, subtasks and task templates.[6]
- Document management, version control, searchable template library and e-signature integration.
- Team communication tools: live chat, video/audio conferencing, shared inbox and notifications.[7]
- Cloud-based storage and collaboration across devices, with global access and scalability.[8]
- HR & workforce management including time sheets, leave management, performance reviews, workloads, dashboards and compliance tools.
Target market
[edit]The platform is primarily positioned for entrepreneurs, small business owners, startup teams, and mid-sized enterprises seeking to unify their operations under a single system rather than maintain multiple disconnected applications. It's made for companies with 1 to 500 employees across any industry.[1]
Business model
[edit]Business in a Box operates as a subscription-based software-as-a-service (SaaS). The company offers tiered pricing plans based on the number of users, feature sets, and support levels. [7] Additional revenue streams include enterprise onboarding services and template licence sales.
Market and competition
[edit]Business in a Box competes in the business productivity, document management, and team collaboration software market, facing rivals such as Asana, Notion, ClickUp and Monday.com. The product differentiates itself through the depth of its document template library, combined with fully integrated operational modules on a single platform.
Leadership
[edit]Bruno Goulet serves as Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Biztree Inc. Under his leadership, the company transformed from a document template provider into a comprehensive AI-powered cloud business operating system.[9]
In 2025, Goulet was recognized as one of the *Top 10 Admired Leaders of 2025* by Industry Era magazine.[10]
