Giovanni Fanelli (Florence, 21th January 1936) is an Italian architect and architectural historian.
Biography
[edit]Giovanni Fanelli graduated in Architecture in Florence with a thesis on the design of a daily newspaper headquarters in Porta a Prato, supervised by Giuseppe Gori[1]. He lived in Florence until 2004 when he moved to Paris[2].
Giovanni Fanelli began his professional career at the University of Florence, collaborating with Leonardo Savioli[3] and then - together with Gian Franco Di Pietro and Paolo Sica - with Edoardo Detti[4]. In 1963, he collaborated on the drafting of the General Urban Development Plan for the Municipality of Castiglion Fiorentino for which Leonardo Savioli and Danilo Santi had been appointed[5]. Since 1981, he has been a full professor of architectural history[6]; he taught History of Modern Architecture from 1981 until his retirement in 2004[7].
Giovanni Fanelli has published numerous works on the history of architecture, cities, graphic design and photography[8]. Some of his books have had international circulation and impact[7][9]. He has also curated several exhibitions, including some with international resonance[7] (such as Wendingen 1918-1931, exhibited in Florence[10], Leeuwarden[11] and Rotterdam). Giovanni Fanelli was scientific director of the Ragghianti Foundation in Lucca from 1995 to 1998[12]. He is co-editor for the Laterza publishing house, overseeing the series ‘Gli architetti’ (The Architects) and ‘Guide all'architettura moderna’ (Guides to Modern Architecture)[8].
