BlueCat Networks is a Canadian enterprise software company that provides Domain Name System (DNS), Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), and IP Address Management (IPAM) solutions, collectively known as DDI, for large organizations.[1] The company is headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

History

BlueCat was founded in 2001 by brothers Michael and Richard Hyatt.[1]

In February 2017, private equity firm Madison Dearborn Partners acquired a majority stake in BlueCat.[2]

In June 2022, Audax Private Equity made a strategic growth investment in BlueCat. Canadian tech news outlet BetaKit reported that the deal valued BlueCat at over US$700 million.[3]

Acquisitions

  • In May 2023, BlueCat acquired Men&Mice, an Iceland-based network management company, offering IP address management, DNS, and DHCP orchestration capabilities.[citation needed]
  • In June 2023, BlueCat acquired Indeni_(company), a network infrastructure monitoring and automation platform.[citation needed]
  • In October 2024, BlueCat announced a definitive agreement to acquire LiveAction, a provider of network observability and performance monitoring solutions. PE Hub reported that BlueCat, backed by Audax, acquired LiveAction from Insight Partners.[4]

Products and technology

BlueCat develops enterprise DDI platforms and related tools to manage core network services across on-premises and cloud environments. Independent analyst GigaOm has evaluated BlueCat in its Radar for DDI reports.[5]

Market coverage

BlueCat’s products have been deployed by large organizations in industries such as finance, healthcare, government, and education. In 2009, Network World reported on Boise State University’s migration from Cisco Network Registrar to BlueCat appliances, citing management benefits and reduced costs.[6]
