BattleTechWiki (BTW) is an online encyclopedia and wiki for information about the BattleTech universe—including information on all the short fiction, books, the brief television series, the multiple video games and game systems that use BattleTech Universe, any upcoming BattleTech material, and more. [1]
History
[edit]Most of the BTW's history is interwoven with its parent website Sarna.net, which was started in 1994. Born on GeoCities as “Slayer’s BattleTech Page” (“Slayer” was the owner Nic Jansma's handle at a BattleTech Center in Chicago, IL) and moving to the domain of sarna.net in 1998[a]. Nic would after having many other fan projects be hosted on the platform make the Mediawiki that became BTW on 8 September 2006, in an attempt to organize the massive amount of information those projects had accumulated. The wiki would then grow from that point, expanding into all areas of the Battletech Franchise and the fandom in general.[1]
As of May 2025[update] the wiki contains over 61,570 articles.[2]
Notable Policies
[edit]Fanon
[edit]Originally BTW would welcome fan-made content (such as fan fiction and fan made designs) to be created on it. However, by May 2011, a consensus was reached by the active users of BTW calling for a change to its overall policy and focus to being strictly encyclopedic from canon sources. As a result, numerous pieces of fan fiction, fan designs, their associated talk pages, and files were copied over to Fandom hosted Wiki, and then subsequently deleted on BTW.[3]
Moratorium
[edit]As BTW is an unofficial fan site. It has no official relationship with the owners or licensees of the intellectual property rights of BattleTech. As such it asks it's editors to refrain from adding content information from official titles for two months after the date of publication.
According to BTW's policy page on Moratorium:[4]
The Sarna BattleTechWiki is an unofficial fan site. It has no official relationship with the owners or licensees of the intellectual property rights (FASA, FanPro, Wizkids, InMediaRes, Catalyst Game Labs, and others) or any individuals employed by those companies.
We also recognize that the IP owners and licensees depend on selling their products. As such, it is deemed inappropriate for this wiki to compete with official products released by those companies, or even to give the impression of doing so.
Therefore, BTW asks its editors to please refrain from adding content information from official titles for two months after the date of publication.

[edit]Notes
[edit]- ^ The domain name comes from the planet Sarna in BattleTech, which Nic was enthralled with as soon as he had read about it in a BattleTech sourcebook Objective Raids.
