B.Laban (Arabic: بـ لبن) is an Egyptian dessert chain known for its dairy-based offerings, including traditional dishes like rice pudding and Om Ali. Founded in 2021, the company rose to popularity for its reinterpretation of classic Egyptian desserts using modern branding and social media marketing. The name "B.Laban" translates to "with milk" in Arabic, reflecting its dairy-focused identity.
History
[edit]B.Laban was established in Alexandria in 2021[1] with the goal of modernizing Egyptian dessert culture by blending heritage recipes with contemporary culinary trends. The brand quickly gained a following among young consumers in Egypt and expanded to several branches domestically and in the Gulf region, including Saudi Arabia.
B.Laban's branding combines elements of traditional and modern design. The company's logo features a stylized milk splash, reflecting its focus on dairy-based products. The design of B.Laban outlets incorporates both contemporary decor and some elements inspired by Egyptian heritage.
Health and Regulatory Issues
[edit]In April 2025, B.Laban was at the center of a multi-country health controversy. Authorities in Saudi Arabia ordered the temporary closure of B.Laban branches following reports of food poisoning allegedly linked to the company’s products. According to Egyptian Streets, the Saudi Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs conducted inspections and responded to consumer complaints by suspending operations of several branches.
Shortly thereafter, the National Food Safety Authority (NFSA) of Egypt also initiated a review of the chain. As reported by Egypt Today, the NFSA confirmed that samples from B.Laban products tested positive for harmful bacteria. In response, branches across Egypt were closed for sanitation and inspection.[2]
Public concern intensified as multiple news outlets including The New Arab[3] and CairoScene[4] highlighted the scale of closures, linking the incidents to broader concerns over food safety enforcement in Egypt.
In the wake of these closures, B.Laban issued multiple public statements denying any deliberate wrongdoing. CEO Moamen Adel held a press conference refuting allegations of food poisoning and rejected circulating rumors of financial misconduct.
A few weeks later, the company announced that branches and factories would gradually reopen under supervision. According to OZ Arab Media, the Egyptian government coordinated with B.Laban to ensure compliance with food safety standards. In an official statement, B.Laban expressed gratitude to President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and relevant ministries for supporting a resolution aimed at both public safety and the preservation of national enterprises.[5]
Public Apology and Rebranding
[edit]The company issued a public apology via its social media channels, acknowledging issues with its quality control and committing to improvements. In the statement, B.Laban's representatives expressed regret for the situation and assured customers of greater transparency in the future. The apology received mixed responses; some customers appreciated the gesture, while others criticized the delayed response and the tone of the message.[6]
