Augustus Color is an Italian-Tunisian post-production and film production company. Active since 1972, it was founded by Giacomo Pelliccia (1933-2013) and is currently managed by the brothers Augusto and Alessandro Pelliccia as manager and technical director and main colorist respectively.
Activities
[edit]Augustus Color's main activity is film post-production, from editing to color correction to the creation of animations and visual effects. As one of the last post-production companies in Europe to handle the development, printing and processing of film stock, Augustus Color has become a point of reference for arthouse cinema and has handled the post-production of films by directors of the caliber of Luca Guadagnino, Pietro Marcello, Alice Rohrwacher, Jonas Carpignano, Andrea Pallaoro and Michelangelo Frammartino. Augustus Color nevertheless has a highly developed digital supply chain and, at the time of the making of the television series “Suburra” in 2017, it was the first post laboratory in Italy to be certified by Netflix for its original productions. [1] When the Italian branch of Technicolor went bankrupt, Augustus Color was entrusted with the company's material legacy, consisting of thousands of film negatives and positive copies for the distribution of numerous Italian and international films of the 20th century.[2] Among the films restored since then by Augustus Color, titles such as Christ stopped at Eboli by Francesco Rosi, the peplum Ulysses by Mario Camerini with Kirk Douglas, We are men, not corporals by Camillo Mastrocinque, The Adventures of Pinocchio by Luigi Comencini, I Am Self-Sufficient by Nanni Moretti, The Little Vice by Edouard Molinaro, Pereira Says by Roberto Faenza, I soliti ignoti by Mario Monicelli, Nostalghia, the penultimate film by the master of Russian cinema Andrej Tarkovskij, presented in 2022 at the Il Cinema Ritrovato Film Festival in Bologna[3]. Furthermore, for years Augustus Color has had an important partnership with the Kingdom of Morocco for the restoration and digitization of the audiovisual archive of the royal family, and in 2023 it signed an agreement with the National Film Archive of Tirana to restore the Albanian film heritage starting with The General of the Dead Army, a 1989 film directed by Dhimitër Anagnosti, based on the novel of the same name by Ismail Kadare.[4]
Over the years, Augustus Color has collaborated on numerous foreign film productions in Italy, including Woody Allen's 2012 To Rome With Love, Ridley Scott's 2013 Exodus: Gods and Kings by Ridley Scott in 2013 and Spectre from the James Bond saga, directed by Sam Mendes in 2015. Between 2020 and 2021 he was the executive producer of the film Across the River and Into the Trees directed by Paula Ortiz, based on the last novel by Ernest Hemingway, filmed in the Veneto region and starring a rich ensemble cast that includes Hollywood stars such as Liev Schreiber and Josh Hutcherson alongside Italian actors of the caliber of Matilda De Angelis, Laura Morante and Sabrina Impacciatore. [5] In 2023 Augustus Color was the executive producer in Italy of the American TV series “The Pendragon Cycle”, based on the eponymous series of fantasy books by Stephen R. Lawhead, produced by the US media giant Daily Wire of Ben Shapiro and Jeremy Boreing for its streaming platform. [6][7], filmed in various locations in Italy including Campo Imperatore in Abruzzo and the Abbey of Fossanova[8][9][10]. Italso produced the documentary Mondo Sexy by the Italianfilm critic Mario Sesti, presented at the Venice Film Festival's 2019 Venice Days section[11], and co-produced Almamula, the debut film by Argentine director Juan Sebastian Torales, presented at the Berlin International Film Festival] of 2023.
