On 26 March 2025, the vice president of South Sudan, Riek Machar, was placed under house arrest along with his wife Angelina Teny, allegedly for plotting a rebellion. The incident is widely seen as a serious threat to the 2018 peace deal of the South Sudanese Civil War.
Background
[edit]South Sudan became independent from Sudan in 2011 after a popular referendum.
Kiir accused Machar of plotting a coup against him, starting the South Sudanese Civil War.
Event
[edit]The incident was first reported by Machar's party, the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-in-Opposition (SPLM-IO).[1] SPLM-IO stated that a convoy of armed vehicles arrived at Machar's residence, and arrested him and his wife, Angelina Teny, allegedly on the orders of President Salva Kiir Mayardit. SPLM-IO stated that the 2018 peace deal had collapsed.
The reason for Machar's arrest was plotting a rebellion against the government of South Sudan.[2]
