Biography
[edit]Early years
[edit]Lee began his musical training at the age of ten, studying flute and composition at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts's junior music program while concurrently pursuing secondary-school education at Wah Yan College (Hong Kong).[1] During this time, Lee frequent participated in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival; in 2009, he was sponsored by the competition association to compete at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in Wales, UK, winning the first prize in the instrument solo (16 or above) category.[2]
Student years
[edit]Lee obtained his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (2010-14) and the Royal Academy of Music (2014-16) as a flautist. His studies were supported by the Aedas Scholarship, the Bernard van Zuiden Music Fund, and the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund (HKJCMDF).[3][4][5] As a student, Lee frequently played in orchestras, which he would cite as a formative influence on his work as a conductor and composer.[6]
Career
[edit]Flautist
[edit]Lee has toured and performed with the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble in Beijing Music Festival, Shanghai New Music Week (China), Hong Kong Arts Festival, New Vision Arts Festival (Hong Kong), Tongyeong International Music Festival (South Korea), and CYCLE Music and Art Festival (Iceland). He has performed as soloist at Lucerne Festival's Boulez 90 celebration concerts (2015) in composer's Memoriale (…explosante fixe… Originel) (1985). He was subsequently invited to reprise the performance with the Lucerne Festival Alumni Ensemble and Matthias Pintscher at the memorial concert that followed in 2016, where he was praised for his "impressive interpretation."[7][8]
Lee has also performed in festivals and concert series in Hong Kong, including the Leisure and Cultural Services Department's Our Music Talents (2018)[9] and City Hall Virtuosi (2023)[10] series, the CityU Arts Festival (2022), HKUST Cosmopolis Festival (2021-22),[11] Tom Lee Music's pandemic online recital series (2020-21),[12][13] as well as Hong Kong New Music Ensemble's Listening Room series.[14] He was the inaugural artist at HKU MUSE's «Around Twilight» lecture recital series (2021) with composer Chan Hing-yan, performing and discussing Luciano Berio's Sequenza I (1958) for solo flute.[15]
Conductor
[edit]Lee has worked with Ensemble Modern at the cresc... Biennial for Current Music Frankfurt Rhine Main in 2023, premiering works by composers Piotr Peszat and Philipp Krebs.[16] The same year, at the 51st Hong Kong Arts Festival, Lee led the Esmé Quartet in the Asian premiere of The Book of Water (2022) by Dutch composer Michel van der Aa.[17] Lee was also conductor-in-residence of the 2023 edition of the International Young Composers Academy in Ticino, leading Ensemble MusikFabrik and Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart in premiering works by course participants.[18] In 2025, he led the world premiere of works by Sonja Mutić, Camilo Mendez and his own at Music Biennale Zagreb with a joint ensemble consisting of musicians from the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble, Vertixe Sonora, and NAE Collective.[19] He has also previously worked as conductor in collaboration with the Hong Kong Composers Guild, performing in the Guild's annual Musicarama festivals and the 2020 edition of the New Generation composers competition.[20]
Composer
[edit]Lee's first opera, Chasing Waterfalls (2021-22), was co-commissioned by New Vision Arts Festival Hong Kong and the Berlin-based group, phase 7 performing.arts. The opera was marketed as "the world’s first opera in which an artificial intelligence will autonomously and in real-time create various phases of the composition, the libretto and the performance."[21] Premiered in September 2022 at Semperoper, the opera was praised by critics for its experimental creative methodology that synthesises multiple creative parties,[22][23][24] with BR-Klassik's Uwe Friedrich calling the work a "modern total-work-of-art" (modernes Gesamtkunstwerk) with Wagnerian references and tendencies.[25] The Hong Kong presentation of the work received mixed reviews, with Edison Hung praising the work's performance, highlighting Lee's "sharp and firm conducting,"[26] and William Chan finding New Vision Festival's 'virtual staging' of the opera with a reduced voice cast "disappointingly mediocre and dated," lacking the "stunning visuals" of the German presentation.[27]
In 2023, Lee was one of the six participant composers in the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra's Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Hong Kong Composers Scheme, for which he composed Des flammes... [study I for orchestra].[28] He received a subsequent commission, for which he composed ... aux cendres [study II for orchestra].[29] The work, premiered by the orchestra and conductor Elim Chan, was praised for its "textural interest" by SCMP journalist Christopher Halls,[30] meanwhile Bernard Charnwut Chan suggests that the piece reflects the composer's "deep commitment to contemporary music and [...] his exceptional skills as a composer."[31]
Lee was a featured composer at the 33rd Music Biennale Zagreb, where he conducted the closing concert of the festival. His commissioned work for the occasion, hic / nunc (2024-25) for amplified ensemble and fixed media, was praised by Alenka Bobinsky as "meditative and ethereal."[32]
