Alex Crackett is a New Zealand politician who is an elected Councillor of the city of Invercargill in the South Island.
Early Life
[edit]Alex was educated at Clifton Full Primary, Surrey Park Primary, Southland Girls High, Fielding Agricultural School, and Central Southland college, before getting a Certificate of Creative Studies at Otago Polytechnic.
Business Career
[edit]Following tertiary education, Alex worked as a Graphic Designer from 2011 to 2014 at Craigs Design and Print, as a Senior Graphic and Content Designer from 2014 to 2019 at Market South.
From 2015 for 4 years, Alex served as the Branch Coordinator at Bellyful, a food bank charity in Invercargill.
She is currently employed as the Head of Marketing and Client Experience at a consultancy and chartered accountancy firm McIntyre Dick.
Alex has also served as a trustee of Active Southland (formerly Sport Southland), Chair of Ride Southland, Chair of Southland Youth Futures, and Chair of Wastenet.
Political Career
[edit]Alex is a member of Local Government New Zealand's (LGNZ) National Council and Chair of LGNZ's Young Elected Members Network.
Elected as a City Councillor in 2016, Alex is now in her third consecutive term and has joined the Mayoral race for the 2025 election in October.
Invercargill City Councillor (2016-present)
[edit]Alex joined the Invercargill City Council on the 8th of October 2016 along with Toni Biddle, Lesley Soper and Allan Arnold.
During a tender submission process for the sustainable recycling contract in the Southland region, Alex faced accusations of bias while advocating for improved working conditions for workers. This resulted in future Mayor, Nobby Clark, calling for her "to be shot" and further harassment from some constituents.
Alex was reelected to the Invercargill City Council in October 2019 as a Councillor working under Mayor Tim Shadbolt.
Alex retained her seat as a Councillor of Invercargill City Council in October 2022 as working under Mayor Nobby Clark.
May 2023 saw a complaint of inappropriate conduct at Invercargill City Council against Nigel Skelt due to harassment of a teenage worker. A week later Nigel resigned from the Invercargil City Council it having been made public that he had coined the nickname "Twin Peaks" and had sexually harassed Councillor Crackett.
