Draft:Alejandro Junger

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alejandro Junger (born 1964) is a Uruguayan-born physician and author practicing in the United States.[1][2] He is known for founding the Clean Program, a commercial wellness and diet regimen, and for publishing books focused on cleansing and detoxification.[3]

Early life and education

[edit]

Junger was born in Uruguay and completed medical school there in 1990.[4] He trained in internal medicine at New York University Downtown Hospital and in cardiology at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.[5]

Career

[edit]

Junger developed the Clean Program in 2009 as a diet and wellness regimen.[6] He has been a guest on national television including the Martha Stewart Show[7][8] and has been featured by Oprah Winfrey's media network.[9] He has also appeared on The Dr. Oz Show, ABC News, and multiple other outlets in the United States.[10][11]

His Clean Program has been followed or publicly endorsed by prominent individuals including Gwyneth Paltrow, Naomi Campbell, Zoe Saldana, Demi Moore, Donna Karan, Meghan Markle, and Rachel Roy.[12][13][14][15]

Relationship with Gwyneth Paltrow and Goop

[edit]

His relationship with Gwyneth Paltrow is frequently cited in the U.S. media, with Paltrow publicly crediting Junger and his Clean Program for addressing her health concerns and dedicating a section of her cookbook It’s All Good to his philosophy.[16] Paltrow featured the Clean Program extensively in her Goop newsletter and has collaborated with Junger in the creation of Goop Wellness products.[17][18][19]

Reception and criticism

[edit]

The Clean Program and Junger’s claims about detoxification have been subject to critical commentary in American media.[20] The New York Times, NPR, and The New Republic have reported that there is little scientific evidence that detox diets remove toxins as claimed.[21][22]

Reports from Salon and Maclean’s note that there is no clinical evidence for key claims made by Junger’s program, and question the cost, restrictiveness, and commercial nature of the Clean business.[23][24] Other articles in Nylon and Coveteur have described mixed participant experiences and highlighted the program’s upselling of supplements.[25][26]

Publications

[edit]

Junger is the author of several books, including:

  • Clean: The Revolutionary Program to Restore the Body’s Natural Ability to Heal Itself (2009)
  • Clean Gut (2013)
  • Clean Eats (2014)
  • Clean 7 (2019)[27]
