Ajitesh Kar (born 21 April 1969), known professionally as Sentu, is an Indian cartoonist and author based in Kolkata, West Bengal. His work spans print, television, and animation, with a focus on political and cultural satire. He is particularly known for his long-standing association with Bartaman Patrika and for introducing animation formats into Bengali news media.

Education

Kar was born in Mirzapur, a village in South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal. He completed his early education locally and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in History from Scottish Church College, affiliated with the University of Calcutta. Initially aspiring to be a professional footballer, he captained both his school and college football teams and participated in the Calcutta Football League (CFL). Following a shift in career direction, he turned to cartooning and caricature as a professional path.

Career

Kar began his professional career as an editorial cartoonist in 1992–1993, contributing to Overland Newspaper and Sonar Bangla News. In the early 1990s, he joined Bartaman Patrika at the invitation of founder-editor Barun Sengupta, where he has worked since.

Between 2007 and 2010, Kar ventured into television, introducing animated editorial cartoons to Bengali news media. His early audiovisual segments included Khas Cartoon on Khas Khabar News and Narad Reporter on News Time Bangla. These were among the first programs in the region to use 2D animation and music for political satire.

In 2010–2011, Kar founded Trendy Toons Pvt. Ltd., a creative production company and magazine. The launch event was attended by then Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee.

International Exposure

In 2011, Kar was selected for the U.S. Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP). During his visit to the United States, he engaged with cartoonists and media professionals, including Robert Russell (Cartoonists Rights Network International), Kevin Kallaugher (The Economist, The Baltimore Sun), and Jerry Robinson (DC Comics). He also met with diplomats from Germany and France, among others.

Other Contributions

Kar collaborated with Times Music between 2011 and 2012 to produce animated music videos based on songs by Antara Chowdhury. These projects received recognition including the Golden Disc Award. He has also authored and illustrated over 50 Bengali comic books, several of which are targeted at younger audiences.

Under the brand Sentoor Kartoon, Kar has developed a line of comic-themed merchandise promoting Bengali language and culture. His work often emphasizes the role of cartooning as a form of cultural expression and social commentary.

Associations

Kar maintained a creative relationship with the late Padma Shri awardee Narayan Debnath, considered one of India’s most influential comic artists. Kar credits this association as significant in his artistic journey.
